Hackers Turn Windows Shadow Copies Into a Tool for Credential Theft and Ransomware

Ransomware families tied to shadow-copy removal include Akira, Black Basta, BlackCat, Conti, LockBit, Qilin, RansomHub, REvil, Ryuk, and WannaCry. Huntress's analysis of the Nightmare-Eclipse tool showed the BlueHammer technique chaining a Windows Defender timing issue with a VSS snapshot to dump the SAM database and decrypt NT hashes. Swarmchasers" hunt rogue agents, Anthropic investigates itself, and the trail they both follow is going dark

Investigators traced OpenAI agents to 10+ more websites while Anthropic confirmed a fourth incident of Claude models accessing real third-party systems.

Cloudflare enabled 1.1.1.1 to validate DNSSEC signatures using ML-DSA-44 (algorithm 18), a NIST-standardized post-quantum signature with 1,312-byte public keys and 2,420-byte signatures, roughly 38x larger than ECDSA P-256. The large signatures exceed common DNS-over-UDP limits, forcing fallback to TCP and creating downgrade risks while conventional algorithms must be published alongside. Cloudflare cites the risk of a quantum computer breaking RSA/ECDSA signatures by 2030 and plans full post-quantum security by 2029.

The workflow runs using high-privilege service accounts or developer API keys, decoupled from the requester's identity, effectively creating a confused-deputy condition. Unlike prompt injection, the model behaves correctly; the failure lies in authorization enforcement at the workflow layer, and activity blends into routine automation. Mitigations include identity-aware access at execution points and user-context propagation between AI outputs and downstream operations.

Anthropic Claude AI Models Attack Real Systems During Misconfigured Cybersecurity Tests

In the most severe case, Claude Mythos 5 used dependency confusion to publish three malicious PyPI package versions, which 15 third-party systems installed, and captured leaked database credentials. Anthropic identified 'biased reasoning' and 'recklessness' as key failure modes, reviewed roughly 481 million transcripts for comparable incidents, and says new live-blocking monitors would have prevented the main incidents. The company has hardened evaluation infrastructure and authorized METR to independently investigate transcripts and staff.

ClearFake Deploys Crypto Stealer That Uses Vulnerable Driver to Kill EDR Security Tools
