CIA’s Michael Ellis says cyber intelligence is changing how the agency operates

CIA deputy director says cyber operations built the intelligence picture enabling US forces to capture Nicolás Maduro in Operation Absolute Resolve.

CIA Deputy Director Michael Ellis said at the Billington Cybersecurity Conference that cyber operations built the intelligence picture that let US special operations forces locate and apprehend Nicolás Maduro within four minutes of landing during Operation Absolute Resolve. He cited the elevation of the Center for Cyber Intelligence to a full mission center as key to aligning resources around the cyber mission. The agency also created a Directorate of Mission Systems and cut its technology acquisition cycle from two to three years to a six-month target, completing more than 400 purchases within that period. Ellis said AI brings unprecedented speed and scale to cyber operations and analysis.

Data from drones in Ukraine is fueling a new Wild West marketplace

Ukraine's defense ministry opened millions of battlefield drone data points to over 100 companies, fueling a fast-growing AI training data marketplace.

Ukraine's Ministry of Defense announced in January it would make millions of data points from tens of thousands of drone flights available to military contractors and commercial companies, with more than 100 companies and the UK government gaining access. Enabled Intelligence says it has processed over 500,000 hours of Ukrainian drone footage for use in future AI training. The article argues this creates a commercial battlefield-data marketplace with risks including lost training-data provenance, an extractive economy benefiting wealthier countries, and a governance vacuum requiring international rules.

GitLab CVE-2026-19478 Comes Under Active Exploitation Within Days of Disclosure

Unauthenticated attackers are actively exploiting GitLab CVE-2026-19478 (CVSS 9.4) to modify or delete public projects days after disclosure.

GitLab CVE-2026-19478, a CVSS 9.4 code injection flaw exploitable via a GraphQL directive without authentication, allows attackers to modify or delete publicly accessible projects, rewrite repository data, forge merge records, and ban maintainers. Affected versions include GitLab CE/EE 18.2 before 18.11.11, 19.0 before 19.0.8, 19.1 before 19.1.6, and 19.2 before 19.2.4. watchTowr reproduced the flaw within minutes of disclosure and observed in-the-wild exploitation against its honeypot network. Fixes shipped in 19.2.4, 19.1.6, 19.0.8, and 18.11.11; interim mitigations include restricting unauthenticated access to /api/graphql or removing public repository access.

New ‘ShieldCrash’ Zero-Day Exploit Targets Microsoft Defender

Researcher Nightmare Eclipse released ShieldCrash, a Microsoft Defender zero-day PoC bypassing ShieldBreak patches to gain System privileges on Windows.

The researcher known as Nightmare Eclipse released a PoC zero-day exploit dubbed ShieldCrash against Microsoft Defender on fully patched Windows systems. The exploit grants arbitrary file read with System privileges and can be used to drop the SAM database. It bypasses Microsoft's September 3 fixes for ShieldBreak (CVE-2026-69414), which itself bypassed patches for the RoguePlanet race condition (CVE-2026-50656). Microsoft has been contacted for comment and has not yet responded.

Windows Defender ShieldCrash 0-Day Lets Attackers Read Arbitrary Files as SYSTEM

Unpatched Windows Defender zero-day 'ShieldCrash' PoC lets local attackers read arbitrary files as SYSTEM, apparently bypassing the CVE-2026-69414 patch.

Researcher MSNightmare published a skeleton proof-of-concept for 'ShieldCrash', an unpatched Microsoft Defender flaw enabling arbitrary file reads with SYSTEM privileges that reportedly persists on supported Windows versions after September 2026 updates. It appears to bypass the recent fix for the Malware Protection Engine elevation-of-privilege flaw CVE-2026-69414 (ShieldBreak), patched in engine version 1.1.26080.3. SYSTEM-level file disclosure could expose credentials, application secrets and registry hives and support post-compromise reconnaissance. No active exploitation is confirmed and Microsoft had issued no specific patch or mitigation at disclosure time.

The Intelligible World of Agents

Recorded Future argues cybersecurity AI agents perform better when reasoning over structured, curated intelligence graphs rather than fragmented alerts or open-source noise.

In a vendor essay, Recorded Future describes how its security agents produced more authoritative analyses after being re-architected to reason primarily over the Recorded Future Intelligence Graph instead of weighting open-source information equally. The author argues agentic decision quality depends mainly on a structured, current operational world model of assets, vulnerabilities, threat actors, detections and organizational context, not on model intelligence itself. The piece further claims frontier model access is commoditizing and that orchestration tooling will converge, making trusted representations of organizational knowledge the durable competitive differentiator.

Iranian hackers use CHOSEN BRICK data-stealing malware to spy on dissidents and journalists

UK NCSC, FBI and Dutch AIVD warn Iranian state hackers deploy CHOSEN BRICK spyware via WhatsApp and Telegram lures against dissidents and journalists since 2025.

The UK's NCSC, the FBI and the Netherlands' AIVD jointly warned that Iranian state cyber actors have deployed CHOSEN BRICK against dissidents, activists and journalists in the UK, US and Netherlands since at least 2025. The Windows malware adds Microsoft Defender exclusions, persists via HKCU Run keys, uses per-device Telegram bots for C2, and can capture screens, activate microphones, steal email and messaging data, and download further payloads. Some stolen data has later appeared on pro-Iranian leak sites, and the agencies note Iranian intelligence has plotted kidnappings or lethal operations against targets abroad.

Protecting organizations from AI-assisted executive impersonation and invoice fraud

When will average people feel AI’s impact?

Interconnects essay argues AI's impact is still a rounding error for average people, comparing looming wage stagnation to Engels' pause.

An Interconnects essay argues that AI currently touches daily life far less than previous industrial revolutions, since its benefits are concentrated in knowledge work and lack tangible consumer goods. The author invokes Engels' pause (1790-1840), when British wages stagnated amid rapid GDP growth, as a warning that popular backlash could kneecap AI's development. He contends the current phase is about building compounding infrastructure, and predicts daily life may look similar even 50 years from now.
