WordPress Security Plugins: How to Choose the Right One

Sucuri's guide breaks WordPress security plugins into hardening, malware scanning, integrity monitoring, and filtering types, and explains how to evaluate and layer them.

The Sucuri guide explains that WordPress security plugins bundle five capabilities - hardening, malware detection, integrity monitoring, activity logging, and application-level filtering - and that plugins run only after WordPress loads, unlike server-level firewalls. It lists leading causes of compromise: outdated plugins and themes, weak or reused credentials, nulled premium software, insecure configuration, and shared-hosting cross-contamination. It concludes with evaluation criteria and a post-installation security checklist for owners without dedicated security teams.

Two CVSS 9.8 Auth Bypasses in miniOrange SAML WordPress Plugin Were Exploited Before Any Database Even Listed the Paid Editions as Vulnerable

Attackers actively exploit two CVSS 9.8 auth bypasses (CVE-2026-61979, CVE-2026-15981) in the miniOrange SAML WordPress plugin, forging SAML responses to become admin.

CVE-2026-61979 is a SAML algorithm confusion flaw that lets attackers sign forged assertions using the identity provider's RSA public key as an HMAC secret; CVE-2026-15981 stems from PHP treating openssl_verify()'s -1 error return as true, allowing a crafted signature that triggers an OpenSSL error to validate. Both bugs independently let unauthenticated attackers obtain WordPress administrator sessions and both are confirmed exploited in the wild. DigitalOcean discovered the exploitation via a network anomaly after public vulnerability databases covered only the Free edition (fixed in 5.4.5), leaving seven independently versioned paid editions appearing patched. Attackers are scanning SSO endpoints from six IPs in Belgium, Nigeria, the US and Germany, and paid-edition fixes require manual uploads across version lines.

$20 per zero-day is already the WordPress plugin reality

TrendAI and CHT Security used an AI pipeline to find over 300 verified WordPress plugin zero-days at roughly $20 per vulnerability.

A pipeline built in three days by TrendAI and CHT Security, presented at Ekoparty Miami, paired AI-driven static analysis with automated Docker provisioning and Chrome DevTools MCP dynamic verification to surface more than 300 critical zero-days in WordPress plugins within 72 hours. The run consumed about 222 million tokens across 95 tasks, averaging roughly $20 per verified vulnerability, with findings including pre-auth RCE, SQL injection, privilege escalation, SSRF, and an AI-assembled downgrade attack chain. Dynamic verification eliminated over 80% of false positives, but manual review at 30-60 minutes per finding remains the bottleneck, straining ZDI and NIST triage backlogs.

400,000 WordPress Sites Affected by Account Takeover Vulnerability in TranslatePress WordPress Plugin

Wordfence disclosed an unauthenticated account takeover flaw in the TranslatePress WordPress plugin, installed on over 400,000 sites, enabling full admin compromise.

On August 11, 2026, Wordfence received a submission for an unauthenticated account takeover vulnerability in TranslatePress, a WordPress plugin with more than 400,000 active installations. Unauthenticated attackers can obtain an administrator's password reset link, reset the account's password, and log in as that administrator. Full compromise of the affected site is possible without any authentication. Exploitation in the wild was not reported at disclosure.

Elementor Pro WordPress Plugin Vulnerability Exploited to Hack Sites

Attackers are actively exploiting critical file-upload flaw CVE-2026-32475 in Elementor Pro, hacking WordPress sites; Defiant has blocked over 190,000 exploit attempts since patching.

Defiant warns that attackers are exploiting CVE-2026-32475 (CVSS 9.8), an unauthenticated arbitrary file upload flaw in the Elementor Pro WordPress plugin's form submission handling, which affects all versions up to 4.2.1 and was patched in version 4.2.2 on August 19. Exploitation began immediately after the fix shipped, with Defiant blocking over 190,000 exploit attempts to date; roughly two-thirds of Elementor's 10 million installations still ran a vulnerable version as of September 4. Successful exploitation writes attacker-controlled PHP files to /wp-content/uploads/elementor/forms/ and can lead to full site compromise; administrators should check that directory for PHP files and review requests to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php.

Five Critical WordPress Plugin and Theme Flaws Enable Site Takeover or RCE

Five critical flaws (CVSS 9.8–10.0) in WPMU DEV Dashboard, Avada, TranslatePress, Pods, and GiveWP enable WordPress admin takeover and RCE.

Wordfence and Patchstack disclosed five critical flaws in WordPress plugins and themes: WPMU DEV Dashboard, Avada, TranslatePress, Pods, and GiveWP. The issues include unauthenticated authentication bypass (CVE-2026-76581), arbitrary file write leading to RCE (CVE-2026-18431), administrator account takeover via password-reset URL exposure (CVE-2026-19632), privilege escalation (CVE-2026-19598), and PHP object injection to RCE (CVE-2026-82222, CVSS 10.0). Patchstack says the GiveWP flaw chains an unsafe unserialize helper, attacker-controlled donation data, and a gadget chain in shipped code.

WordPress Adds Automated Plugin Reviews to Block High-Risk Updates Before Distribution

WordPress Events Calendar Vulnerabilities Let Hackers Take Over 600,000 Websites

Two unauthenticated RCE flaws (CVSS 9.8) in The Events Calendar WordPress plugin threaten 600,000 sites; patched in 6.17.4.1.

Wordfence Argus disclosed two critical unauthenticated vulnerability chains in The Events Calendar WordPress plugin, tracked as CVE-2026-78006 and CVE-2026-78159, both scoring 9.8 CVSS. CVE-2026-78006 enables PHP object injection leading to RCE via a Lazy_Post_Collection gadget chain, while CVE-2026-78159 abuses Element_Classes::parse_array() to invoke wp_update_user() and reset the admin password. The digest also reports a Dropbox breach affecting nearly 5,000 accounts via the Lenovo ID integration, spyware attacks on at least 14 Serbians using NoviSpy or Pegasus, and a password recovery attack targeting hundreds of thousands of X accounts tied to the new X Money service. Other items include a 14-hour compromise of Coder's Cloudflare infrastructure delivering malicious Terraform modules, donor data breaches at Davayte and You Are Not Alone via the Stripe/WooCommerce integration, a $2.5M Aquifer crypto heist, and a TVING breach exposing data of almost 40 million accounts.

Elementor Pro Flaw Could Let Unauthenticated Attackers Upload PHP and Execute Code

Patchstack disclosed CVE-2026-32475 (CVSS 9.0), an unauthenticated file-upload flaw in Elementor Pro enabling PHP upload and RCE; fixed in version 4.2.2.

Risky Bulletin: Russia starts blocking DoH and DoT

Russian users report blocks on DoH and DoT servers, including Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and Google 8.8.8.8, in an apparent censorship crackdown.

Russian internet users began reporting failures connecting to DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS servers, suggesting a government crackdown on the two privacy protocols. The blocks reportedly cover Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 and Google's 8.8.8.8 resolvers; Roskomnadzor has not officially confirmed the action. The agency tested a similar block in March on Beeline's network and had named DoH for blocking as early as 2021. The bulletin also briefly notes state-sponsored phishing of EU officials, a DDoS against Norway's Digdir, the ReliaQuest/ShinyHunters dispute, and older ransomware and breach disclosures.
