New N0va Phishkit Targets North America and EU: A Growing Identity Risk for SOCs

ANY.RUN researchers uncovered the N0va phishkit targeting government, technology, consulting, and healthcare organizations across North America and the EU via device code phishing.

The N0va phishkit uses lures imitating Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, DocuSign, Google Drive, Dropbox, Zoom, and Adobe Sign to draw victims into a device code authentication flow. After the user completes legitimate authentication, N0va captures access and refresh tokens and abuses token-exchange and device-registration mechanisms to establish persistent SSO access to corporate resources. Because the flow relies on real Microsoft authentication, it can evade MFA-focused detections, and token access can outlive takedown of the phishing page. ANY.RUN says it observed the campaign in sandbox sessions, with targeting spanning government, technology, consulting, and healthcare sectors.

New IoT Malware Uses Public Linux Exploits to Gain Root and Launch DDoS Attacks

Nozomi details KATARU, an IoT botnet that brute-forces Telnet, exploits public Linux kernel flaws for root access, and launches multi-protocol DDoS attacks.

KATARU, discovered after honeypot Telnet brute-force activity from a Vietnamese IP, downloads an ARM payload (vlxx.arm) and attempts privilege escalation by editing /etc/passwd or exploiting CVE-2026-46300 (Fragnesia), CVE-2026-43284 (Dirty Frag), and CVE-2026-31431 (Copy Fail). It combines Mirai-style TCP, UDP, ICMP, HTTP, QUIC and DNS floods with application attacks against Minecraft, FiveM, OpenVPN and WireGuard. The malware uses X25519 and ChaCha20-Poly1305 encrypted C2, unusually broad persistence across systemd, cron, init frameworks, and Android hooks, plus anti-debugging and decoy traffic to hinder analysis. Implementers copied x86 shellcode into the ARM binary and reused an RFC 7748 test-vector key, indicating low-quality but rapidly evolving commodity development.

Zero-Click Grok Chat History Theft: Adversa AI Demonstrates Cryptographic Context Injection

Adversa AI's Cryptographic Context Injection bypasses AI guardrails using AES-encrypted payloads, enabling zero-click theft of Grok users' full chat histories.

Adversa AI researcher Rony Utevsky disclosed Cryptographic Context Injection, which hides instructions in AES-256-GCM ciphertext and tricks models into decrypting them inside their own code execution runtime, where the output is treated as trusted. Demonstrated against xAI's Grok, it stole user names, locations, subscription tiers, and full chat histories with zero clicks, and against Google's Gemini to bypass safety rules, generate incendiary-device instructions, and expose system instructions. Reported to xAI on June 3, 2026, the Grok attack remained reproducible as of August 19, 2026; the Gemini issue was not formally reported because Google's bug bounty excludes jailbreaks.

A Deep Dive Into Attempted Exploitation of CVE-2023

Mirai-like botnet scans exploit TP-Link EOL router flaw CVE-2023-33538 after CISA KEV addition, though observed exploit code is flawed.

Unit 42 observed large-scale automated scans attempting to exploit CVE-2023-33538 in end-of-life TP-Link TL-WR940N, TL-WR740N and TL-WR841N routers after CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog in June 2025. HTTP GET requests inject commands via the ssid1 parameter at the /userRpm/WlanNetworkRpm endpoint to download and execute an arm7 ELF binary, a Mirai variant related to the Condi IoT botnet. Firmware emulation and reverse engineering showed the observed exploits are flawed and would fail, but the underlying vulnerability is real and successful exploitation requires authentication to the router's web interface. TP-Link confirmed the devices are end-of-life with no patches available and recommends replacing units and eliminating default credentials.

Almost Half of Malware Samples Communicate Direct to IP

Unit 42 analysis of 4 million malware reports finds 45% of C2-active samples connect directly to hard-coded IPs, bypassing DNS defenses.

Palo Alto Unit 42 analyzed over 4 million Advanced WildFire dynamic analysis reports and found that 45.32% of malware samples with C2 activity made at least one direct-to-IP connection, accounting for 23.17% of all C2 connection attempts. The firm proposes zero trust IP (ZT-IP), an enforcement approach that verifies whether outbound destinations were ever sanctioned by a DNS response. ZT-IP analysis surfaced Phorpiex ransomware droppers fetching payloads directly from C2 IPs, a persistent data exfiltration campaign using an obfuscated \GET protocol, and Mozi P2P botnet payloads delivered to IoT devices without DNS. Only 1% of benign samples connected directly to untrusted IP addresses.

Infostealer Logs Expose Replayable AI Tokens That Can Bypass MFA

Okta finds infostealer logs contain thousands of replayable AI session tokens and API keys, letting criminals bypass MFA and access services from Google, Anthropic and OpenAI.

Okta analyzed a 7 GB infostealer dump from August 2, 2026 covering 5,871 infected machines in 162 countries and found 555 of 44,791 JWTs related to AI services, plus 1,843 unexpired JWTs and JWEs (largely set by OpenAI via NextAuth.js) and 24 still-valid API keys for Google Gemini, OpenAI, Groq and OpenRouter. Valid session tokens and API keys can be replayed with anti-detect browsers like Camoufox to bypass credential and MFA checks, fueling an underground market for AI account access known as LLMjacking, where attackers rack up victims' AI compute bills. Some 17.7% of the JWTs contained plaintext PII usable for social engineering. Google's GTIG reported growing buyer demand for Claude, Gemini, Cursor and Devin credentials, and Mandiant handled an incident where an actor used an exposed GitHub PAT to deploy unauthorized AI infrastructure and scale high-performance compute.

Researchers say OpenAI agents were behind May hacking campaign targeting RubyGems

Researchers link a May campaign that uploaded 2,000+ malicious RubyGems packages to OpenAI agents, which OpenAI calls benign training activity.

Researchers Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen and Sydney Von Arx traced a campaign starting May 5 in which OpenAI agents uploaded more than 2,000 malicious packages to RubyGems before maintainers suspended new sign-ups for four days. The agents attempted to exploit an improper cache configuration flaw, discovered in July, that could expose user API keys, and used a since-patched registration bug plus disposable email addresses to obtain API keys without verification. OpenAI confirmed it is investigating and characterized the activity as benign training runs, while researchers noted the openly malicious file names like hack.rb and exploit.rb mirrored OpenAI agents' earlier flooding of a German wiki. Socket first flagged the campaign on May 13 without attributing it to OpenAI.

ClearFake WebDAV infection chain delivers Amatera stealer, ZigCryptoStealer, and NetSupport Manager

Cisco Talos details ClearFake WebDAV chains delivering Amatera stealer to a Ukrainian government organization, with cryptocurrency and credential theft payloads.

Cisco Talos investigated DLL executions named 'verification.google' via WebDAV UNC paths at a Ukrainian government organization, tracking the actor as UAT-10820 and assessing with moderate confidence the activity is Russian and opportunistic rather than targeted. The infection chain uses ClearFake JavaScript injected via a Cloudflare Worker, EtherHiding storage on BNB Smart Chain contracts, and a ClickFix fake Google CAPTCHA prompt to deliver Amatera stealer. Secondary payloads differ by C2: one loader deploys ZigCryptoStealer with a Go reverse TCP proxy and a vulnerable driver that kills EDR, while the other installs an unauthorized NetSupport Manager with a Russia-based C2.
