Microsoft sees some new wrinkles in invoice-scam emails

Microsoft researchers observed a BEC invoice scam sending 1M+ AI-assisted emails impersonating executives and ServiceNow to request ~$50,000 payments.

Microsoft researchers tracked a campaign of more than one million invoice-scam emails launched in early August, with about 88% of targets in the United States. Attackers impersonated top executives and ServiceNow, fabricating forwarded email threads and invoices to convince accounts payable teams to send payments of nearly $50,000. Microsoft found indicators such as extensive HTML comments and highly uniform template construction consistent with AI-assisted campaign development, though it could not independently establish how much content AI generated.

Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries says DDoS attack delayed payments to sellers

Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries says a DDoS attack and subsequent security measures delayed seller payments, leaving roughly $240 million unpaid.

Wildberries, one of Russia's largest online marketplaces, said a distributed denial-of-service attack on systems used to track and withdraw seller earnings delayed payments, with funds to be transferred after technical procedures complete. The Russian Union of Marketplace Sellers reported about 20 billion rubles ($240 million) unpaid, and 95.6% of nearly 2,000 surveyed sellers had not received expected payments. Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) previously claimed an operation with the hacker group Cyber Corps disrupted Wildberries' payment and customer service systems, though the company has not confirmed whether the DDoS attacks were connected.

Amasty patched dozens of Magento/Adobe Commerce extensions, including two critical flaws allowing unauthenticated web shell upload and remote code execution.

Extension vendor Amasty released fixes for a large batch of Magento and Adobe Commerce modules, with critical unauthenticated file upload flaws in Advanced Product Reviews and Gift Card that allow attackers to plant web shells and take full control of stores. Dozens of additional high-, medium- and low-severity extensions were also patched. The vendor says the release affects almost every Magento and Adobe Commerce store. A related Order Attributes flaw was previously exploited heavily, with Sansec Shield blocking over 12,000 attempts against 25% of Magento stores in three days.

Researchers find a loophole that lets expired credit cards make unauthorized payments

UMass Amherst researchers showed at USENIX Security 2026 that NFC relay attacks can rewrite unprotected expiration dates, letting expired Visa contactless cards keep making payments.

UMass Amherst researchers presented the Zombie Card attack at USENIX Security 2026, using two smartphones to relay and modify NFC payment data from expired Visa cards. The expiration date lies outside the card's digital signature coverage in Visa Kernel 3, and one major US bank accepted $1-$500 test purchases plus live $2.79 and $3.19 purchases with rewritten dates. Mastercard, American Express, and Discover rejected tampered dates; researchers notified Visa in May 2025 and no CVE or confirmed fix existed at publication.

Risky Bulletin: Russia tells data centers to deploy drone defenses

Russia ordered data center operators to deploy drone strike defenses under a Putin decree allowing temporary state takeover of unprotected critical infrastructure.

The Russian government instructed data center operators to deploy protections against drone strikes under a presidential decree signed by Putin that allows temporary state administration of critical infrastructure operators failing to defend against Ukrainian hacks and drone strikes. Although data centers are not formally critical infrastructure in Russia, the decree applies to them because other sectors depend heavily on cloud services; Russia has more than 180 data centers, over 80% in the European region within range of Ukrainian strikes. The digest also reports a Dropbox breach affecting nearly 5,000 accounts via the Lenovo ID integration, spyware attacks on at least 14 Serbians using NoviSpy or Pegasus, and a password recovery attack targeting hundreds of thousands of X accounts tied to the new X Money service. Other items include a 14-hour compromise of Coder's Cloudflare infrastructure delivering malicious Terraform modules, donor data breaches at Davayte and You Are Not Alone via the Stripe/WooCommerce integration, a $2.5M Aquifer crypto heist, and a TVING breach exposing data of almost 40 million accounts.

Google’s $10,000 refund test shows why AI agents need zero trust

Google released an open-source zero-trust reference architecture for AI agents defending against prompt injection via signed database writes, gVisor sandboxing, and deterministic gating.

Google's demonstration, built on the Agent Development Kit (ADK) and Gemini, shows a customer support agent that could be manipulated into issuing a $10,000 refund on a $149 order and exposing environment variables via AI-generated Python. The architecture adds three security layers outside the model: cryptographic signatures on database writes verified via Cloud KMS backed by Cloud HSM, gVisor sandboxing of generated code with network egress disabled, and a Semantic Gateway applying deterministic checks to prompts and tool calls. It treats system prompts as insufficient boundaries because prompt injection, prompt tuning, or model updates can change agent behavior.

Who gets to define the rules for AI?

Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez argues that proposals from large AI labs—particularly Anthropic's roadmap requesting antitrust exemptions for safety coordination—amount to a cartel letting incumbents define rules for everyone else. He draws parallels to the 1975 SEC NRSRO credit-rating designations and the EU's 1985 Motor Vehicle Block Exemption, where safety justifications produced incumbent-protecting market structures. Gomez supports independent review of highly capable AI systems but disputes who writes the standards, who conducts review, and who participates. Recorded Future outlines ten automation strategies ransomware gangs use, from credential marketplaces to bulletproof hosting, urging intelligence-led defense.

A Recorded Future blog post promoting an Insikt Group report and webinar describes how ransomware gangs leverage automation across their attack cycles. The Insikt Group identified ten key strategies, including selling breached credential databases on underground forums, checkers and brute-forcers for validating stolen credentials, loaders and crypters for evading antivirus, banking injects, exploit kits, spam and phishing services, bulletproof hosting services, sniffers, and automated marketplaces for selling stolen credentials and digital fingerprints. The post argues defenders should adopt intelligence-led automation to counter the speed and scale of automated criminal tooling.

Attackers Use Passkey Phishing to Hijack Microsoft Cloud Accounts and Exfiltrate Data

Microsoft details two campaigns: million-email CEO impersonation ACH fraud and passkey-themed vishing that hijacks Microsoft cloud accounts for data theft and extortion.

Microsoft disclosed a campaign that sent over one million CEO-impersonation scam emails between August 3-5, 2026, targeting U.S. accounts payable departments with fake ServiceNow subscription invoices to induce ACH transfers, using generative AI to tailor templates. A second campaign detected since May 2026 uses passkey/MFA-themed voice phishing posing as the IT help desk, redirecting victims via SMS to counterfeit Microsoft sign-in pages and adversary-in-the-middle or device-code flows to hijack accounts. Post-compromise activity includes adding attacker-controlled authentication methods, high-volume Microsoft Graph activity, SharePoint and OneDrive downloads, and mailbox collection via REST APIs. Microsoft attributes initial access to Storm-3121 (linked to ShinyHunters and Falcon extortion) and Storm-3032 (UNC6671, a BlackFile splinter operating the Helix extortion brand).
