Towards Scalable and Cost-Efficient Vulnerability Detection: A Study on Automatic Query Generation

A study finds LLM-synthesized CodeQL queries improve average F1-score by 82% over baseline queries, offering scalable vulnerability detection versus direct LLM scanning.

Researchers conducted an empirical study evaluating whether LLMs can synthesize executable CodeQL queries from National Vulnerability Database vulnerability data. LLM-generated queries significantly enhanced baseline CodeQL suites, yielding an 82% improvement in average F1-score across a diverse set of real-world vulnerabilities. A cost-benefit analysis shows direct LLM-based scanning of entire repositories is often computationally and financially prohibitive, while LLM query synthesis offers a scalable and cost-effective alternative for large-scale vulnerability detection.

Cost-Aware Hierarchical Multi-Agent Ransomware Detection and Family Attribution

Researchers propose a hierarchical multi-agent system that cuts ransomware analysis cost by 44% while reaching 96.57% detection accuracy.

An arXiv paper (2609.04820) presents a Cost-Aware Hierarchical Multi-Agent System (HMAS) for adaptive ransomware detection and family attribution. Specialized agents run static analysis first, with dynamic and memory modalities invoked only when confidence is insufficient or specialists disagree; a Meta Orchestrator balances accuracy against computational cost via a cost model, and a locally deployed LLM verifies difficult cases. The system achieved 96.57% accuracy, 0.96 F1-score, and 0.99 ROC-AUC for binary detection, and 0.90 macro-F1 for multiclass family attribution. Average analysis cost dropped 43.97% versus exhaustive analysis, with 56.05% of cases resolved using static evidence alone.

ClearFake WebDAV infection chain delivers Amatera stealer, ZigCryptoStealer, and NetSupport Manager

Cisco Talos details ClearFake WebDAV chains delivering Amatera stealer to a Ukrainian government organization, with cryptocurrency and credential theft payloads.

Cisco Talos investigated DLL executions named 'verification.google' via WebDAV UNC paths at a Ukrainian government organization, tracking the actor as UAT-10820 and assessing with moderate confidence the activity is Russian and opportunistic rather than targeted. The infection chain uses ClearFake JavaScript injected via a Cloudflare Worker, EtherHiding storage on BNB Smart Chain contracts, and a ClickFix fake Google CAPTCHA prompt to deliver Amatera stealer. Secondary payloads differ by C2: one loader deploys ZigCryptoStealer with a Go reverse TCP proxy and a vulnerable driver that kills EDR, while the other installs an unauthorized NetSupport Manager with a Russia-based C2. Similar Amatera chains were separately documented by Malwarebytes and Blackpoint Cyber, but with no shared infrastructure.

WordlistLoader Delivers Amatera via ClickFix, SynkLoader Phishes Windows Passwords

Gen Digital details WordlistLoader delivering Amatera Stealer via ClickFix and EtherHiding, while SynkLoader phishes Windows credentials through Microsoft Teams.

Gen Digital identified WordlistLoader, an intermediate stage that reconstructs shellcode encoded as plain English words (or 16-byte UUID chunks) and loads Amatera Stealer 4.3.3-alpha1, delivered through ClearFake ClickFix prompts on compromised websites. The chain uses EtherHiding to fetch JavaScript from a blockchain smart contract, hidden cmd.exe via conhost, WebDAV-mounted shares with rundll32 execution, and ETW bypass via hardware breakpoints. The stealer adds hardened WoW64 syscalls, Heaven's Gate indirect-syscall trampolines and a redesigned application-bound encryption bypass. Separately, Expel observed SynkLoader distributed via Microsoft Teams phishing impersonating IT service desks, installing an MSI from Azure blob storage and serving a fake lock screen to capture credentials.

PoisonedRefresh: A Fileless Linux Rootkit That Injects PHP Web Shells Into F5 BIG-IP APM Server Memory

Sophos details PoisonedRefresh, a fileless Linux rootkit that injects a memory-resident PHP web shell into F5 BIG-IP APM after exploitation of CVE-2025-53521.

On September 8, 2026, SophosLabs published an analysis of Linux/Agnt-IC (dubbed PoisonedRefresh by ESET) found in compromised F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager environments. Initial access leverages CVE-2025-53521, an unauthenticated RCE in BIG-IP APM when an access policy is configured on a virtual server; F5 confirmed exploitation and links the activity to cluster c05d5254, while Shadowserver observed 795 exposed vulnerable endpoints. A first stage hidden in a modified umount binary modifies /usr/sbin/httpd and SELinux configuration and embeds itself in BIG-IP upgrade images for persistence. The second-stage ELF intercepts __libc_start_main, hooks apr_dso_load, and injects a PHP web shell into libphp memory via mmap manipulation, leaving no disk artifacts, and exposes a /bin/bash shell via a local UNIX domain socket instead of a TCP port.

DPRK APTs: Ted backdoor and curlRAT target South Korean media and automotive sectors

Rapid7 uncovered a DPRK-linked Linux toolkit using a HAProxy-embedded ted backdoor, SSH keylogger, and curlRAT against South Korean media and automotive firms.

Rapid7 Labs identified a previously undocumented framework attributed with medium confidence to DPRK actors, targeting South Korean automotive and media organizations likely since early 2025. The toolkit embeds a backdoor compiled into HAProxy 2.8.12 using its filter API, plus trojanized crond, agetty, atd, sshd, and polkitd, an SSH keylogger storing credentials under /var/lib/sshd/, and a curl-based RAT with a watchdog thread. It enables remote command execution, malicious script injection into served webpages (a watering-hole loop), credential harvesting, and long-term surveillance. Hardcoded C2s are associated with APT37 via ThreatFox, and exposed groupware portals and mail servers align with Kimsuky tradecraft; the initial access vector and any CVE remain unconfirmed.

Hackers Weaponize AI Safety Guardrails to Hide Malware From LLM-Powered Security Scanners

ESET says Russia-aligned actor UAC-0099 hid guardrail-triggering comments in VBScript to derail LLM-based malware scanners in Ukraine.

ESET researchers linked a technique named GuardBreaker to Russia-aligned threat actor UAC-0099 during an attack against an organization in Ukraine. The group embedded a safety-sensitive, weapon-related request in a VBScript comment so an LLM-powered analysis tool might interpret it as an instruction and refuse or truncate analysis before reaching the malicious code. The VBScript downloaded MATCHBOIL, a C#-based loader used by the group alongside MATCHWOK and DRAGSTARE. OWASP guidance recommends treating code comments and metadata as untrusted input, sanitizing it, and never treating an LLM refusal as a clean verdict.

New Phishing Attack Creates Malicious Pages Inside the Victim’s Browser

Barracuda details a phishing campaign that renders pages in-browser via blob URLs, routed through Microsoft Teams and cdn.bloom[.]io to evade detection.

Barracuda researchers analyzed a phishing campaign that generates a blob URL to render the phishing page entirely inside the victim's browser, leaving no static page for scanners to inspect. The chain begins with a Docusign-themed email containing a calendar invite, followed by a crafted redirect through Microsoft Teams to a resource on cdn.bloom[.]io that the browser converts into the blob URL. Service workers, iframes, and a hidden command-and-control configuration indicate the page is part of a centrally managed phishing platform that can be updated and steered across victims. Researchers recommend inspecting blob URL activity, monitoring OAuth authorization flows, and analyzing the full click path in email security controls.

New SLEEPWALKER Backdoor Waits for One Crafted Packet, Then Runs Its Own Bytecode

A new Windows backdoor dubbed SLEEPWALKER hides as ESET Management Agent's dpapi.dll, waits for a crafted network packet, then executes custom 23-instruction bytecode.

The implant monitors every network interface indefinitely for a specifically crafted trigger packet, then executes commands written in a custom 23-instruction bytecode language over six transports, including TCP, UDP, ICMP, SMB named pipes, raw promiscuous capture, and VMware VMCI. It has no embedded infrastructure, makes no outbound connections of its own, and requires prior local administrator access to install; no victims, attribution, or in-the-wild deployment are confirmed. Reichel assesses the design as consistent with a targeted, well-resourced operation, while ESET calls the scenario's security relevance negligible since it provides no new access path.

Check Point details JSCeal, a V8-compiled JavaScript stealer that replays stolen cookies to bypass Google authentication, spread via crypto malvertising.

Check Point Research's new report analyzes JSCeal, a compiled V8 JavaScript malware obfuscated with javascript-obfuscator using RC4-protected strings, control-flow flattening, and proxy functions. Delivered through fake TradingView installers on malvertising sites overlapping the WEEVILPROXY/MeadowLocust and SourTrade campaigns, it harvests cookies, passwords and OAuth tokens from Chromium browsers, records keystrokes and screenshots, and can replay stolen Google session cookies to bypass authentication. It also installs a local proxy with service-specific handlers for Binance, Bybit, and Ledger to intercept and modify cryptocurrency-related traffic.

German Manufacturer Shrinks Security Alert Response While Protecting 10,000 Endpointsnew

Vendor case study: a German manufacturer's five-person SOC cut alert triage time using ANY.RUN's cloud sandbox across 10,000 endpoints.

ANY.RUN published a case study in which a five-person security team at an unnamed German manufacturer replaced an air-gapped forensic laptop with its cloud-managed interactive sandbox, protecting roughly 10,000 endpoints and 10,000 users. The vendor claims a median 15 minutes saved per alert, 20-40 daily tasks processed, a 2.5-minute alert-to-isolation target, and a 95% agreement rate between analyst and sandbox verdicts; all figures are vendor-supplied with the customer identity withheld. The writeup also describes detonating a multi-stage phishing chain from a PDF link to a password-protected ZIP to malware execution.

15 Minutes Saved Per Alert: How a Lean German Manufacturer Protects 10,000 Endpoints with ANY.RUN

A five-person security team at a German manufacturer protecting 10,000 endpoints cut triage time by 15 minutes per alert after adopting ANY.RUN's cloud sandbox.

Philipp Z., Security Lead at a leading German manufacturer, described how a five-person team protects 10,000 endpoints and users using ANY.RUN's Interactive Sandbox in a private cloud. The firm previously relied on a single air-gapped forensic laptop running Flare VM, which caused 5-10 minute setup delays, single-user bottlenecks, and selective triage. The switch reportedly saved roughly 15 minutes per alert and reduced forced wiping and reimaging of user machines. ANY.RUN data cited in the piece puts manufacturing security workloads 22% above other major industries.
