The Router Within: Eliciting Native Skill Routing from a Frozen LLM

Gavel reads native skill-routing signals from a frozen LLM's forward passes with two linear maps, beating retrieve-and-rerank pipelines by up to 21.9 points on Qwen3-32B.

Gavel (Glance And Verdict from a frozen LLM) elicits skill routing from a frozen agent LLM using two trained linear maps that read mid-layer states, keeping all skill text out of context. A glance step scores the full library against compact per-skill banks built in one forward pass at installation; a verdict step resumes shortlisted skills' forward passes and fuses likelihood and yes/no judgments as a product of experts. It transfers zero-shot to three public benchmarks plus SkillTraj, a new benchmark of 372 simulated agent trajectories. On Qwen3-32B it beats progressive disclosure and retrieve-and-rerank pipelines adding 1.2B–16B external parameters by up to 13.4 points on written tasks and 21.9 when skills are needed mid-rollout.

Switching Password Managers in 2026

An Apple password-management engineer (writing personally) explains switching password managers via iOS direct app-to-app export, crediting FIDO Credential Exchange for passkey portability.

Ricky Mondello, an Apple engineer in password management and authentication (writing personally, not for Apple), demonstrates moving 100 items from 1Password to Apple Passwords via the iOS system export, which transfers passwords, passkeys, verification codes, and notes directly between apps with Face ID confirmation and no intermediate files. He credits the FIDO Alliance's Credential Exchange format (first draft May 2024, now an open spec) and iOS 26/macOS 26 for enabling phishing-resistant credential transfer between apps like 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, DuckDuckGo, and Devolutions. The post is advice rather than news, recommending bulk transfer on the existing device, switching AutoFill to the new app, and treating the new manager as the source of truth.

From Parameters to Answers: How LLMs Retrieve and Use Their Internal Knowledge

Interpretability study traces how Qwen, Llama, and Gemma route query information and internal knowledge across layers when answering questions.

Researchers used layerwise interventions on hidden states to separate query-routing signals from target knowledge in language models, testing Qwen, Llama, and Gemma on country-continent questions with varied answer types. A pair-conditioned request direction strengthens before interventions alter downstream knowledge, opening a causal window while answer-supporting content is still forming. Trajectories differ by model: Gemma shows a partially overlapping mid-layer routing profile, while Llama has no sustained routing-effect window under the same gates.

What must happen for AI’s trillion-dollar gamble to pay off

Hyperscalers need 2.7x productivity gains by 2030 to justify nearly $1.1 trillion in AI data center spending, or risk bankruptcy and capital misallocation.

Wharton finance professor Jessica Wachter estimates hyperscaler AI expenditure will reach nearly $1.1 trillion through 2027 and that a 2.7x productivity increase is needed to break even by 2030. AI revenues of roughly $150-200 billion this year fall far short of about $750 billion in annual spending, with total investment from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle potentially exceeding $5 trillion over four years. Alphabet reported its first free cash flow deficit (about $5.9 billion) since its 2004 IPO due to AI infrastructure costs. Researchers warn that failed demand could make the buildout the largest capital misallocation in history, with depreciating GPU chips risking stranded assets.

Drift-Constrained Optimization: Only Direction Matters in Fine-Tuning Instruct Models

Drift-Constrained Optimization reformulates fine-tuning as update-direction selection, letting Qwen3 models improve target tasks within a behavioral drift budget.

The paper specifies a behavioral drift budget before optimization and shows that update direction is the remaining degree of freedom, reformulating fine-tuning as a direction-selection problem. In a stringent QA-only setting where instruct models must still generate multi-step reasoning at inference, a coarse layer-selective probe reverses the failure of QA-only fine-tuning. Across Qwen3-8B and Qwen3-14B, these directions substantially improve scientific reasoning and multilingual translation, matching or outperforming dedicated translation systems over 100+ languages and giving stronger initialization for reinforcement learning.

How Fragile Is Safety Alignment at Frontier Scale? A Single-Direction Attack on a 320B MoE

Researchers show directional ablation breaks refusal in GLM-5.3-Flash, a 320B-parameter MoE, cutting refusal by 41–89 points across seven benchmarks.

The study extends directional ablation, a white-box attack that removes an aligned LLM's refusal behavior, from dense models up to ~70B parameters to GLM-5.3-Flash, a 320B-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 288 routed experts, four-wide hyper-connection residual, and block-FP8 quantization. Editing attention, dense, and routed-expert writers jointly removes 0.776 of refusal, with 74% of the effect existing only under the joint intervention; the conventional module-name-based recipe reaches only 0.066 and fails silently on MoE architectures. CVE-2025-14733 is an out-of-bounds write in WatchGuard Fireware OS allowing unauthenticated remote code execution, exploitable on firewalls configured for IKEv2 VPN and potentially even after the configuration was deleted if a static branch-office VPN peer remains. WatchGuard released patches in December and confirmed in-the-wild exploitation; Shadowserver found over 115,000 exposed Fireboxes at the time, with nearly 9,000 still unpatched after nine months. CISA added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog in December under BOD 22-01 and on Thursday confirmed ransomware gangs are now exploiting it, without providing campaign details. WatchGuard serves more than 250,000 small and mid-sized companies through 17,000+ security resellers and service providers.

Steering Geometry: Validating Human Value Geometry in LLM Steering Space

Researchers show LLM activation steering vectors encode human value geometry predicted by Schwartz's theory, with fidelity improving at scale but degrading after instruction tuning.

The study tests whether latent geometry of activation steering vectors reflects theory-specified structure in human values, using Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values and a new 26K-sample benchmark spanning 20 values. Distribution-driven methods (CAA, SphericalSteer, ODESteer) recover predicted value topologies with Spearman correlation up to 0.51 (p < 10^-13), while behavior-centric methods (COLD-Steer, BiPO) steer comparably but show little geometric fidelity. Geometric alignment improves with model scale but drops after instruction tuning. Better geometric alignment also yields more human-consistent cross-value transfer, steering one value lifting compatible values and suppressing opposing ones.

Researchers model curriculum learning as Wasserstein transport over difficulty distributions, finding curriculum benefits are strongly task- and budget-dependent with no dominant strategy.

The framework represents curricula as trajectories of training distributions over discrete difficulty levels, decoupling ordering, matched exposure, endpoint smoothness, and pacing. Qwen-Drive 1.0 tells you why it brakes, just don't expect the explanation to match the maneuver

Alibaba's Qwen-Drive 1.0 adds 3D perception and planning modules to Qwen3.5-4B for driving tasks, though explanations often mismatch maneuvers.

Qwen-Drive 1.0, built on Qwen3.5-4B, combines spatial perception, traffic question answering, and route planning in one vision-language model, adding a bird's-eye-view perception module and a Planning Expert trained via staged fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. The paper finds text-image models do not inherently grasp 3D space; spatial accuracy only improved when the base vision-language model itself was trained on spatial tasks, while avoiding catastrophic forgetting of general knowledge. The cut reinforcement learning-trained version halved road-departure rate in simulation from 24% to 12%, and the model beats specialized driving models in most of Qwen's benchmarks, but its explanations sometimes conflate causes like distant red lights and crossing children, and results partly rest on self-designed tests. The work follows prior findings from PaLM-E and a UC Santa Cruz adversarial sign attack on DriveLM showing VLM driving models' reasoning and spatial gaps.

Discrete Beckmann Transport Models for One-Step Language Modeling and Reasoning

DBTM achieves one-step text generation via a time-independent transport map trained directly from data, removing pretrained teacher distillation.

Discrete Beckmann Transport Models (DBTM) build a time-independent flow whose autonomous transport map provably carries any point in ambient space to a fixed point on simplex vertices in a single step. The fixed-point property is characterized by a conservation equation whose residual can be minimized directly from data, eliminating the need for a teacher flow, distillation, and time conditioning. A partial-context interpolant extension turns additional function evaluations into refinement steps rather than ODE integration steps. On language modeling and reasoning tasks, DBTM's one- and few-step generation improves quality and accuracy over discrete diffusion and continuous flow baselines.

A Mysterium VPN study found 36,769 self-hosted AI endpoints reachable through internet scanning, with only 2.02% returning an HTTP authentication challenge. Open WebUI accounted for 18,529 reachable instances, Ollama for 6,935 fingerprinted hosts, and 5,223 agent-builder and workflow platforms were exposed, often holding API keys, database credentials, and other secrets. The report highlights LLMjacking risk from exposed Ollama APIs, a critical Flowise bug (CVE-2026-40933), leaked n8n tokens, and prior SentinelOne/Censys research finding roughly 175,000 exposed Ollama hosts in 130 countries.
