Beyond the Perimeter: Building Resilience Against Cloud and SaaS Supply-Chain Attacks

ShinyHunters exploited an Oracle PeopleSoft zero-day to steal data and extort roughly 100 organizations, including the Council of Europe, for up to $2.3M.

Between May and early June 2026, the ShinyHunters group exploited a critical zero-day in Oracle PeopleSoft across about 100 organizations and 300 instances worldwide, per reports cited by The Register. Stolen records included employee and student personal data, payroll, tax, financial and health information, plus immigration and passport documents. AgentCypher.ai estimates extortion demands of $400,000 to $2.3 million per victim, typically in Bitcoin; the Council of Europe refused to pay. The article uses the incident to argue for Zero Trust, supply-chain risk management, rapid patching, encrypted distributed backups and defined recovery-time objectives.

Engineered Persuasion: Evaluating Personalized Pretexts in LLM-Generated Spear Phishing

A study of 180 US workers found each LLM phishing personalization level raised click-intention odds by 28%, but credibility depends on context fit.

The arXiv paper evaluates how personalized pretexts in LLM-generated spear phishing affect perceived credibility, using 180 US working adults across 1,436 evaluations of emails with four cumulative personalization levels, from workplace context to shared-project details. Convincingness rose 2.40 points per level in sensitivity analysis and click-intention odds increased 28% per level, while non-clickers shifted toward deleting rather than reporting. Qualitative coding showed details matching the recipient's role and routines supported credibility, whereas incorrect, vague, or channel-inappropriate details raised suspicion. The authors argue personalization effectiveness depends on pretext fit, with implications for workplace security training.

Counterfeit installers to system compromise: Tracking a deceptive software download campaign

Microsoft tracks a counterfeit software-installer campaign compromising multinationals' China operations, moderately linked to the Silver Fox (Yinhu) actor.

Microsoft Defender Experts is tracking an active campaign using spoofed software download sites for brands such as Razer, Kaspersky, Microsoft Edge, Calibre, and Baidu Netdisk on .com.cn and .hl.cn domains, delivering installer archives whose hashes change per download, indicating server-side payload generation. The implants establish persistence, weaken security protections, and communicate with attacker-controlled infrastructure, with confirmed compromises across healthcare, manufacturing, gaming, technology, logistics, government, and education. Microsoft assesses with moderate confidence that the activity matches the publicly reported Silver Fox (Yinhu) fake software campaign; it has not attributed it to a nation-state actor.

Don't Trust the Super-App: A Case Study of Russia's Max

Researchers show super-apps like Russia's Max can silently capture mini-app UI, storage, network traffic, and authentication, enabling untraceable user impersonation.

The paper challenges the assumption that super-apps are trusted intermediaries, citing WeChat's passive cross-mini-app tracking, Russia's Max's entanglement with state prosecution of online speech, and Iran's Bale operating during a prolonged internet shutdown. Using Max as a case study, the authors demonstrate that a super-app can capture mini-app UI, read and write mini-app local storage, inject arbitrary JavaScript into mini-app runtimes, mediate network traffic, and control authentication context, enabling silent user impersonation without trace. They argue these capabilities are inherent to the super-app architecture and call for mobile OS and app store interventions to close the blind spot.

Subgroup Membership Inference Audits of Differentially Private Synthetic Text

Audits of 32 differentially private synthetic-text releases show subgroup membership leakage is concentrated in few records and systematically underestimated by average-case attacks.

The paper defines a subgroup-targeted membership inference game in which the target pool is an explicit parameter, to audit residual leakage in differentially private synthetic text releases. The audit instantiates 32 proxies across four datasets, three generators (DP-SGD fine-tuning, API-based prompting, and activation steering), and five privacy budgets. DP substantially reduces average leakage at every budget, but remaining leakage is concentrated: roughly a tenth of records carries about 40% of it, and the noise removes more measured leakage from random records than from high-risk ones. Which records leak depends on the release mechanism, so record-level risk cannot be assessed independently of the release.

Hackers Impersonate IT Support on Microsoft Teams to Take Control of Employee PCs

Microsoft warns of a human-operated campaign where attackers pose as IT support in Teams to gain remote PC control and reach domain controllers.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence observed attackers abusing Microsoft Teams external collaboration to impersonate IT/helpdesk staff, persuading employees to grant screen control via Quick Assist or RMM tools. Operators deploy malicious MSI packages via silent msiexec, run encrypted JavaScript implants through portable Node.js, and persist via EdgeUpdate Run keys or Startup folder entries.
