OpenAI has hundreds of contract workers reading your ChatGPT conversations

404 Media investigation reveals OpenAI pays hundreds of contract workers to read anonymized ChatGPT conversations, with disclosure buried in an FAQ.

A 404 Media investigation found OpenAI uses hundreds of contract workers, recruited via Crossing Hurdles and paid over $50/hour through Mercor, to rate real ChatGPT conversations on a seven-point scale to reduce sycophancy. Prompts are anonymized but can still contain sensitive personal data despite a privacy filter OpenAI admits can make mistakes. Users can opt out only via the default-enabled 'Improve the model for everyone' setting, which applies solely to new chats. Anthropic and Google confirmed similar human-review programs for Claude and Gemini.

‘Show How 3M Is 0% at Fault:’ Expert Witness Used ChatGPT to Write Report Defending Company in Deadly Explosion Lawsuit

An expert witness hired by 3M used ChatGPT to write portions of his report in a fatal Houston explosion lawsuit, with prompts discoverable.

An expert witness retained by 3M in litigation over the 2020 Watson Grinding explosion in Houston, which killed three people and destroyed roughly 200 homes, used ChatGPT to draft significant portions of his expert report. Discovery records revealed prompts asking ChatGPT to 'show how 3M is 0% at fault' and to defend 3M's standard of care. The case demonstrates that AI prompts used to produce expert testimony can be discoverable during litigation, with hundreds of millions of dollars in liability at stake in the ongoing lawsuits.

The Machines Are Calling: Measuring Automated and Synthetic Voices in Unwanted Inbound Calls

Voice honeypot measurement finds at least 26.9% of unwanted US inbound calls open with machine voices, 13.1% with fresh synthetic speech.

An interactive voice honeypot using language-model personas on real US numbers recorded 10,987 calls over 66 days, following the FCC's February 2024 ruling that AI-generated voices fall under the TCPA. Of 7,233 greeted calls, 13.8% opened with recordings replayed from other calls and 13.1% with fresh audio labeled synthetic, with replays making up 45% of the detector's flagged rate. Synthetic openings concentrated in lead-generation spam (33.8%) rather than fraud (21.1%), and only 0.44% of calls disclosed automation. Prevalence tracked how long a bait number had circulated, and campaigns outlasted their numbers, with one synthetic voice serving nine campaigns.

Inside ‘Project Lily’: The Humans Reading Your ChatGPT Chats

404 Media reveals OpenAI's 'Project Lily' has hundreds of contractors reading real ChatGPT user prompts, exposing sensitive personal data despite privacy filters.

404 Media reports that OpenAI employs hundreds of contractors who read real ChatGPT user prompts, including whole conversations, to rate and critique the chatbot's responses across a user base of over 900 million. Prompts are anonymized and run through OpenAI's Privacy Filter model, but the company acknowledged sensitive personal details can still reach reviewers, and 'user memories summaries' may reveal a user's location and personal context. The review work includes training ChatGPT to be less sycophantic and to stop anthropomorphizing itself, following lawsuits linking the sycophantic 4o model to multiple suicides. Anthropic confirmed it also uses human review to improve its models, and OpenAI's 'improve the model for everyone' data-sharing setting is on by default for free, Plus, and Pro users.

ChatGPT Flaw Let a Planted Prompt Send a Victim's Gmail Data to Another Account

Check Point showed a planted prompt could make ChatGPT silently exfiltrate Gmail data via a hidden cross-container channel; OpenAI took the service offline.

Check Point Research demonstrated that a single planted instruction in a ChatGPT conversation could make the model silently exfiltrate Gmail data, chat history, and files to an attacker's account while replying normally to the user. The covert channel abused read/write properties on files in an internal JFrog Artifactory instance shared by ChatGPT code-execution containers across accounts, turning package metadata into shared storage. Injection vectors included pasted prompts, shared conversations, and custom GPT builder instructions; default connected-app permissions allowed Gmail reads without user approval. OpenAI confirmed the internal service was taken offline after disclosure; this is Check Point's second reported ChatGPT covert channel after a DNS-based one fixed in February.

What Else Needs Fixing? Exploring Cost-Effective Test-Time Compute for Revision Propagation in Artifacts Generated Through Conversation

A new benchmark shows LLMs reach 68.3-93% accuracy propagating local revisions across conversationally generated artifacts, with parallel-sample selection most cost-effective.

The paper introduces a benchmark for revision propagation: when users request a local change, LLMs must identify dependencies and update all affected parts of an artifact generated through conversation, where context lives in the chat history. Nine revision methods, including sequential reflection and parallel sampling variants, were evaluated on gpt-oss-20b/120b, gpt-5.4-mini, and qwen3.5-9b/27b/122b. Baselines scored 68.3-93% accuracy, and selecting among three parallel samples via LLM-based or medoid selection improved accuracy by 2.2-9.7% as the most cost-effective test-time compute strategy. Code and dataset are released.

Scammers have figured out the best time to text you

Malwarebytes threat data shows scammers tailor platforms per scam, with the web as top channel, Friday midday peaks, and MrBeast the most impersonated person.

Malwarebytes analyzed its threat data from April 15 to July 14, 2026 across more than 20 scam categories, finding scammers match platforms to scam types: job scams via email, romance scams via social media, and tech support scams via phone. The web is the top delivery channel ahead of email and SMS, and Malwarebytes says it blocks about 500,000 phishing sites a day. Scam texts peak at 12:00 pm ET, roughly 874% above the quietest hour, with volume peaking on Fridays about 50% higher than the start of the week. MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) appears in about 30% of impersonation scams, and the most impersonated brands are Google, Microsoft, Apple, Roblox and Amazon.

What the 3M ChatGPT case reveals about AI governance

3M litigation shows ChatGPT prompts can become discoverable evidence, forcing enterprises to govern AI conversation records.

In the Watson Grinding explosion litigation, an engineering expert retained by 3M had used ChatGPT, and a surfaced prompt asked the system to 'show how 3M is 0% at fault'; after an off-record deposition demand, more than 350 pages of previously unproduced ChatGPT material were provided. The author argues AI interaction histories are becoming part of decision records and discovery material, a trend the American Bar Association has already examined. Enterprises are urged to manage retention, ownership, sharing, and deletion of AI conversation logs across tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini.

WeChat Zero-Click Worm Took Over Accounts on iPhone and Android via Incoming Calls

Researchers demonstrated a zero-click WeChat worm that hijacked accounts via incoming calls; Tencent blocked the exploit server-side after July disclosure, no real attacks reported.

Security firm Calif built a worm that seized WeChat accounts via incoming calls without any target interaction, demonstrating it spreading across three test phones (Android to iPhone to Android). Once exploited, the attacker gains full control of the WeChat account, including messages, calls, payments, and mini programs, though not the phone itself. Tencent mitigated the flaw server-side, confirmed blocked on 28 August, shipping WeChat 8.0.77 for Android and 8.0.76 for iOS on 21 August. No CVE has been assigned, Tencent published no advisory, and no attacks in the wild have been reported; WeChat/Weixin counts 1.439 billion monthly active users.
