Parallels Desktop Flaw Lets Unprivileged Mac Users Gain Root Access

JFrog's 'ParaShells' research details CVE-2026-90894, a Parallels Desktop local privilege escalation letting unprivileged macOS users gain root via tar argument injection.

JFrog researcher Yuval Moravchick disclosed CVE-2026-90894 ('ParaShells'), a critical local privilege escalation flaw demonstrated against Parallels Desktop 26.4.0 build 57513 on Apple silicon. The world-writable /var/run/prl_disp_service.socket accepts connections from unsigned clients, and argument injection into a tar extraction command via the --use-compress-program option executes attacker-controlled code with root privileges. The attack needs no administrator permissions, running VM, or Parallels-signed client, and a one-line PoC yielded a root shell. Risk is highest on developer workstations, shared training systems, and enterprise Macs.

Stealth rootkit targeting F5 BIG-IP could expose enterprise identity gateways

Sophos analyzed a stealth Linux rootkit that hides a web shell in memory on compromised F5 BIG-IP APM identity gateways, evading file-based detection.

Sophos analyzed a second-stage Linux rootkit implant found in compromised F5 BIG-IP APM environments running Apache and PHP, linked to exploitation of CVE-2025-53521, an unauthenticated RCE. The implant hooks Apache's PHP-loading process and serves modified in-memory versions of three legitimate webtop PHP files (apm_css.php3, full_wt.php3, webtop_popup_css.php3), leaving on-disk files untouched so hashes and integrity checks pass. It also establishes access via an authenticated local UNIX socket that can provide an interactive /bin/bash session. Experts warn compromised APM appliances, which handle federated SSO and terminate TLS at enterprise perimeters, could enable SSO token theft and lateral movement to trusted downstream applications.

Plesk Backup Manager Flaw Lets Low-Privileged Users Gain Root Access to Servers

CVE-2026-68488 in Plesk Backup Manager lets low-privileged subscription users exploit a symlink race during restores to gain root on Linux servers.

CVE-2026-68488 is a symlink race condition in Plesk Obsidian for Linux Backup Manager during subscription-content restore operations, allowing a user with Panel and FTP access to change ownership of files outside their subscription and escalate to full root access. Affected versions are Plesk for Linux 18.0.80.6 and earlier and 18.0.79.10 and earlier; Plesk for Windows is not affected. Patches are available in 18.0.80.7 and 18.0.79.11 or later. The flaw requires valid subscription access, so it is not unauthenticated remote code execution, but successful exploitation yields complete server compromise, especially dangerous in shared-hosting and multi-tenant deployments.

3BB Attacker Used MeshCentral Backdoor for Root Access, Targeted Subscriber Credentials

Hunt.io found an attacker holding root access inside Thai ISP 3BB via a MeshCentral backdoor, targeting subscriber RADIUS credential databases.

Hunt.io discovered an exposed attacker server on June 3, 2026 revealing an ongoing intrusion at 3BB, one of Thailand's largest broadband providers. The attacker maintained hidden MeshCentral agents reporting to www.ayuthayatech[.]com (device group TH-3BB) and held root on internal servers. Recovered scripts sprayed passwords over SSH against more than 55 internal machines, planted web shells, added SSH keys, searched for stored credentials, and targeted RADIUS subscriber credential databases, though exfiltration was not confirmed. The toolkit included a full exploit for FortiGate SSL-VPN flaw CVE-2024-21762 against mail.3bb.co[.]th, but the initial access vector is unestablished, and a cleanup script erased logs while preserving the backdoor.

Hackers breach F5 BIG-IP APM devices to deploy Linux rootkit

Sophos analyzed a Linux rootkit on F5 BIG-IP APM devices that injects a fileless PHP web shell, likely after CVE-2025-53521 exploitation.

Sophos analyzed a Linux rootkit targeting F5 BIG-IP APM environments, also tracked by ESET as PoisonedRefresh, which hijacks Apache's apr_dso_load module loader to inject a fileless PHP web shell into memory. The implant intercepts __libc_start_main, hides strings with RC4, creates a password-protected local UNIX socket backdoor for interactive Bash access, and persists across BIG-IP upgrade images while modifying SELinux configuration. It is likely a second-stage payload following exploitation of CVE-2025-53521, a critical RCE flaw F5 reclassified from a DoS issue in March. The ShadowServer Foundation tracked 795 F5 BIG-IP APM endpoints exposed online.

**Subject:** CVE-2026-2035703: Tozed ZLT X300 5G CPE — Unauthenticated Remote Root Code Execution via TR-069 Command Injection (CVSS 9.8)

Tozed ZLT X300 5G CPE firmware 6.01.3 has an unauthenticated TR-069 command injection (CVE-2026-2035703, CVSS 9.8) enabling root code execution.

Tozed ZLT X300 5G CPE router firmware 6.01.3 contains an OS command injection (CWE-78) in the TR-069/CWMP client daemon netcwmpd, tracked as CVE-2026-2035703 with CVSS 9.8. The IPPingDiagnostics Host parameter is passed unsanitized into sprintf, and the resulting shell command executes via system_by_root() as root. An attacker operating a rogue LTE base station built from roughly $300 of SDR hardware can impersonate the carrier's Auto Configuration Server and inject arbitrary commands. The disclosure does not report any observed exploitation.

The Machine With Many Faces: Post-Exploitation Identity Misuse in SPIFFE/SPIRE

Unit 42 demonstrates that root access on a Kubernetes node lets attackers spoof SPIFFE/SPIRE attestation and harvest co-located workloads' SVIDs.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 describes post-exploitation techniques in which an attacker with root on a compromised Kubernetes node spoofs Linux cgroup metadata used by the SPIRE agent during workload attestation, tricking it into issuing a co-located workload's SPIFFE Verifiable Identity Document to an attacker-controlled process. The research shows the core trust assumption of machine-identity systems—that the node is trusted—collapses once root is obtained, exposing all cryptographic identities scoped to that node. Unit 42 released an open-source tool, Spooffe, for defenders to test identity exposure, and notes the technique has not been observed exploited in the wild.

Hackers deploy Linux rootkit on F5 BIG-IP APM devices, hiding web shell in memory

Sophos analyzed a Linux rootkit, tracked as PoisonedRefresh, on hacked F5 BIG-IP APM devices hiding an in-memory web shell linked to exploited CVE-2025-53521.

Sophos and ESET analyzed an implant (named PoisonedRefresh by ESET) deployed on compromised F5 BIG-IP APM appliances, which serves enterprise, financial, government, and public sector deployments. The second-stage payload intercepts __libc_start_main, hooks Apache's APR module loader (apr_dso_load), RC4-encodes key strings, and rewrites PHP file reads in memory to embed a web shell inside legitimate scripts like apm_css.php3, full_wt.php3, and webtop_popup_css.php3, leaving on-disk files unchanged. A related installer component infects /usr/sbin/httpd, persists across BIG-IP upgrade images, modifies SELinux configuration, and deploys the payload. The malware also creates a Unix domain socket at /run/bigtlog.pipe that hands authenticated local connections to /bin/bash; F5 links the activity to CVE-2025-53521, an unauthenticated RCE in BIG-IP APM already exploited in the wild.
