[AINews] 10% worse, 100x cheaper, 10000x faster: Why Simulation is taking over

Latent Space argues AI training pipeline stages—rewards, data, teachers, curricula, environments—are flipping from human-made to model-made simulation.

Latent Space's AINews essay traces how each component of AI training has turned synthetic since 2022: reward models (InstructGPT, RLAIF), synthetic pretraining data (Microsoft Phi, NVIDIA Nemotron-4 340B), model teachers (Alpaca, DeepSeek-R1 distillation), and self-generated curricula (Self-Rewarding Language Models, SPIN). In 2026 it highlights Karpathy's autoresearch loop—700 experiments yielding 20 kept improvements, cutting GPT-2 training time from 2.02 to 1.80 hours—and Z.ai's GLM-5.3 fully synthetic RL environment, judging, and verification stack. It frames these shifts as 'simulation': 10% worse but 100x cheaper and 10,000x faster than human equivalents.

SyncWorld: Visual Calibration Enables World Models as Zero-Shot Simulators

SyncWorld is an action-conditioned world model acting as a zero-shot robotics simulator across unseen environments via visual calibration.

Researchers propose SyncWorld, an action-conditioned world model that simulates robot action outcomes in unseen environments without additional training. It uses a visual calibration episode of paired frames and actions to establish the setup-specific Action-Visual Mapping in context. Experiments show accurate simulation of action outcomes in novel settings and that simulated rollouts enable test-time policy improvement without training.

CARDEA: Auditable Reasoning Grounded in Spatial Evidence for End-to-End Coronary Angiography Interpretation

CARDEA, a vision-language model trained only on public data, matches cardiologists on coronary angiography complexity assessment while exposing auditable bounding-box evidence.

CARDEA is a unified large vision-language model serving as the inference core of an end-to-end coronary angiography pipeline from multi-view videos to study-level diagnosis. It was trained on public datasets through visual alignment, self-distilled Chain-of-Box cold start, and reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards encouraging bounding-box reasoning. It reached 0.91 accuracy on dominance classification under domain shift and 0.90 on complexity assessment, comparable to two interventional cardiologists. RLVR raised zero-shot report generation vessel-severity macro-F1 from 0.513 to 0.686, while supervised imitation alone did not.

NovaFabric: Tamper-Evident, Replayable Evidence for Autonomous AI Agent Runs

NovaFabric seals autonomous AI agent runs into tamper-evident, replayable Run Capsules enabling third-party audit under EU AI Act and ISO 42001.

NovaFabric records autonomous agent runs without modifying agent logic into portable Run Capsules (fifteen-entity schema) sealed with DSSE signatures, RFC 3161 timestamps, a Merkle log, and redaction attestations, supporting four-mode replay and third-party Evidence Bundle verification. Evaluation shows tampering rejected across three tested classes, 14/14 credential types redacted while preserving 9/9 decoys, and 140/140 mutations localized; blast-radius queries reach 45.5ms p99 over 10M edges. Limits include only 2/10 tool-using workloads completing replay due to missing tool-response substitution and ingest capped at 61.6 req/s. The contribution integrates OpenTelemetry, DSSE/in-toto, and W3C PROV rather than new cryptography.

Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes

Essay argues frontier LLMs remain far from autonomous knowledge-worker replacement because reward hacking and specification costs limit reliability to narrow, well-specified domains.

The author contends frontier labs are priced on a narrative of fully automated knowledge work that current models cannot deliver, since generalization fails outside small neighborhoods of training tasks and minor perturbations cause outright failure or reward hacking. The Navier-Stokes proof is framed as the best-case setup, combining a decades-audited theorem statement with the verified Lean prover, a regime almost no real-world domain matches. Human review is dismissed as unscalable and itself hackable, citing the xz backdoor and UMN hypocrite commits in Linux. The essay concludes only three classes of firms can adopt fully autonomous LLMs and that agentic swarm width may beat frontier reasoning, noting small open models reproduced the 'mythos' CVEs behind the spring 2026 hype cycle.

AI Agents Are Here. So Are the Threats.

Unit 42 demonstrates nine framework-agnostic attack scenarios against AI agents built with CrewAI and AutoGen, causing data leakage, credential theft and remote code execution.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 investigated how attackers can target agentic applications, implementing two functionally identical apps with the open-source CrewAI and AutoGen frameworks and executing the same attacks on both. Nine attack scenarios produce outcomes including information leakage, credential theft, tool exploitation and remote code execution. Findings show most vulnerabilities are framework-agnostic, arising from insecure design patterns, misconfigurations and unsafe tool integrations rather than flaws in the frameworks themselves. The team published defense strategies per scenario and open-sourced the source code and datasets on GitHub.

τ^τ-Bench: An Environment for End-To-End, Realistic Agent Construction

New τ^τ-bench tasks coding agents with building deployable customer-service agents; best config, Claude Opus 5, passes only 23.9% of simulations.

Researchers introduce τ^τ-bench, an end-to-end benchmark where a developer agent must build a complete customer-service agent from real business records, a client with requirements, a production API, an inherited codebase, and cost/model limits, then is scored by deploying it against held-out simulated users. Across 53 tasks in four domains, the strongest configuration, Claude Opus 5 under Claude Code, passes just 23.9% of evaluation simulations versus an 82.2% expert-authored reference ceiling. Failure modes mirror those of human developers: shallow queries instead of deep record comprehension, almost no client communication, and shipping the first architecture that runs rather than experimenting.

Breeze Comet Executes Hundreds of Fraudulent Transactions via Brazilian Payment Systems

Google/Mandiant profile Breeze Comet, a Brazil-based e-crime group executing fraudulent Pix and STR payment transactions at banks, retailers, and fintechs.

Google Threat Intelligence Group and Mandiant describe Breeze Comet (formerly UNC5669), a financially motivated threat actor active since September 2023 targeting Brazilian financial services, retail, and e-commerce. The group gains access via password spraying, vishing impersonating IT support to install RMM tools like AnyDesk, WhatsApp social engineering, and exploitation of vulnerable JBoss AS servers for web shell deployment. It uses compromised government websites as C2, deploys the Rust-based COBALTSPIN tunneler and multiple custom backdoors (LIGHTPAINT, MILDFROST, KICKPLATE, BOATBEAM), then clears logs after executing hundreds of fraudulent transactions through Pix, STR, and Boleto payment systems. At least one heist yielded tens of thousands of dollars, with infrastructure suggesting expansion toward Latin America and Africa.
