Suspected China-Nexus Actor Exploits VMware vCenter Flaw, Deploys Babuk

QUIRSO attributes exploitation of VMware vCenter CVE-2026-59310 to a suspected China-nexus actor that hit 361 IPs in 47 countries, deploying backdoors and Babuk.

German incident response firm QUIRSOS assessed with moderate confidence that a suspected China-nexus actor, likely operating in UTC+08:00 hours, exploited VMware vCenter flaw CVE-2026-59310 (CVSS 9.8 directory traversal) beginning five days after Broadcom's July 29 patch. The campaign compromised 361 unique victim IPs across 47 countries, most in Germany, the US, Turkey, Iran, and France. The actor abused cron jobs, a XOR-obfuscated 'linuxFile' WebSocket backdoor with systemd/cron persistence, a JSP web shell, SSH authorized-keys manipulation, and a reverse SSH tool, with one Babuk deployment reported. A separate vCenter 'vcenter_admin' account creation consistent with CVE-2026-59309 exploitation was also observed from August 1.

New ‘ShieldCrash’ Zero-Day Exploit Targets Microsoft Defender

Researcher Nightmare Eclipse released ShieldCrash, a Microsoft Defender zero-day PoC bypassing ShieldBreak patches to gain System privileges on Windows.

The researcher known as Nightmare Eclipse released a PoC zero-day exploit dubbed ShieldCrash against Microsoft Defender on fully patched Windows systems. The exploit grants arbitrary file read with System privileges and can be used to drop the SAM database. It bypasses Microsoft's September 3 fixes for ShieldBreak (CVE-2026-69414), which itself bypassed patches for the RoguePlanet race condition (CVE-2026-50656). Microsoft has been contacted for comment and has not yet responded.

Off Guard: Breaking LiteLLM from authentication bypass to cloud compromise

Wiz found LiteLLM auth bypass (CVE-2026-59822) and post-auth RCE (CVE-2026-59821) chainable to cloud compromise; the bypass is in CISA KEV with in-the-wild exploitation.

Wiz scanned roughly 3,074 internet-facing LiteLLM deployments and found 9.6% accepted the default master key sk-1234 or required no authentication, making post-auth attacks effectively pre-auth. The MCP endpoint accepts any Bearer token and grants a valid session (CVE-2026-59822), confirmed exploited in the wild via honeypots and added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Custom code guardrails allow post-auth root-level RCE via exec(compile(...)) (CVE-2026-59821), while pass-through endpoints lack URL validation, enabling cloud credential theft in post-auth scenarios. All assigned vulnerabilities have been patched; the research was presented at DEF CON 34.

Chaotic Eclipse Releases Crowdstrike Falcon ZeroDay FalconFlank

Researcher Chaotic Eclipse released FalconFlank, a PoC zero-day privilege escalation exploit against CrowdStrike Falcon's Microsoft Office macro removal feature.

Security researcher Chaotic Eclipse (also known as Nightmare Eclipse) published FalconFlank, a proof-of-concept zero-day exploit for a privilege escalation flaw in CrowdStrike Falcon Sensor. It abuses the Microsoft Office file malicious macro removal remediation feature, which runs with high privileges, and works on fully updated Windows 11 25H2 and Windows Server 2025 with Falcon Phase 3 Optimal Protection. CrowdStrike says it is investigating and advises customers to disable the Microsoft Office File Suspicious Macro Removal Windows policy. The same researcher recently released zero-day PoCs against Kaspersky Endpoint Security (HardBreacher) and Avast Antivirus (PrettyPrague), the latter dumping the SAM database for a SYSTEM shell.

Google fixes the seventh actively exploited Chrome zero-day of 2026

Google patched 230 Chrome flaws in version 153.0.8010.36, including actively exploited V8 out-of-bounds write CVE-2026-87491 (CVSS 8.8), the seventh 2026 Chrome zero-day.

Google released Chrome 153.0.8010.36 on Linux and 153.0.8010.36/.37 on Windows and Mac, fixing 230 security vulnerabilities. CVE-2026-87491, an out-of-bounds write in the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine (CVSS 8.8), is being exploited in the wild through specially crafted HTML pages to execute arbitrary code inside Chrome's sandbox. Google says it is the seventh actively exploited Chrome zero-day of 2026, following CVE-2026-2441, CVE-2026-3909, CVE-2026-3910, CVE-2026-5281, CVE-2026-11645, and CVE-2026-85046. Researcher Jihyeon Jeong of Seoul National University reported it on 2026-08-06 and received a $2,500 bounty; Google disclosed no technical details or attribution.

September 2026 Patch Tuesday: Record patch count, 2 zero-days, and a SigRed successor

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday delivers a record patch count, fixing two exploited zero-days and a wormable DNS flaw dubbed a SigRed successor.

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday sets another record patch count, fixing two vulnerabilities exploited as zero-days: CVE-2026-81963, a Windows Update Stack low-privilege-to-SYSTEM escalation reported by MSTIC, and CVE-2026-85880, a Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call escalation reported by Proofpoint. Zero Day Initiative's Dustin Childs urges priority on a cluster of 20 potentially wormable bugs including DNS RCE CVE-2026-69730, described as a spiritual successor to SigRed, plus Kerberos authentication bypass CVE-2026-69676 that could give any authenticated domain user RCE on domain controllers, and Exchange RCE CVE-2026-55007 via a malicious Visio attachment. All Windows fixes are bundled in cumulative updates, and experts stress prioritizing exploitable, reachable flaws over raw patch counts.

N-able Issues Fourth N-central Hotfix in Five Weeks for Unauthenticated RCE Flaw

N-able shipped Hotfix 4 for a CVSS 10.0 unauthenticated RCE (CVE-2026-86218) in N-central RMM, with conflicting statements on exploitation.

N-able released 2026.3 Hotfix 4 (build 2026.3.1.14) fixing CVE-2026-86218, a static code injection weakness (CWE-96) scored 10.0 on CVSS 4.0 that enables pre-authentication remote code execution on on-premises N-central RMM servers. Hosted NCOD instances are already patched; N-able's incident notice says the flaw was observed exploited in the wild while its release notes say exploitation is unconfirmed. Huntress, which has tracked N-central attacks since August, advises IP allowlisting, VPN-only access, or taking internet-reachable servers offline until patching. It is the fourth hotfix in five weeks, following fixes for CVE-2026-86206 and CVE-2026-86207, which CISA added to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.

Cosmos EVM Flaw Exploited After Cosmos Labs Knew Every Blockchain Running It Was Vulnerable

Attackers exploited a critical Cosmos EVM balance bug (GHSA-7g4w-cg88-2cq2) to drain funds from six blockchains; fixed in v0.6.2 and v0.7.2.

Cosmos Labs disclosed that a critical balance-handling flaw in the shared Cosmos EVM module (GHSA-7g4w-cg88-2cq2, no CVE) was exploited to drain funds from six blockchains between August 20 and 25, 2026. The bug, reported April 25 and initially judged harmless, lets vesting accounts delegate more than their spendable balance, wrapping balances to roughly 2^256 and triggering unintended mint/burn in reconciliation, potentially halting chains or burning victims' holdings. Fixes shipped in v0.6.2 and v0.7.2 on August 19 as state-breaking coordinated network upgrades; operators who cannot upgrade must halt their chains. The post-mortem notes the team used public silent patching for a fund-threatening issue, contrary to its own bug bounty policy, and that eleven deployments had never registered with its security channels.
