CVE-2026-34486: Apache Tomcat Auth Bypass Vulnerability
SentinelOne details CVE-2026-34486, an Apache Tomcat EncryptInterceptor bypass exposing unencrypted cluster communications, with patches and workarounds available.
CVE-2026-34486 stems from an incomplete fix for CVE-2026-29146, letting network-positioned attackers bypass the EncryptInterceptor and read plaintext Tomcat cluster traffic, including session and application data between nodes. Affected versions 9.0.116, 10.1.53 and 11.0.20 are fixed in 9.0.117, 10.1.54 and 11.0.21. Workarounds include network-level encryption such as IPsec or VPN tunnels and isolating cluster communications to secured network segments.
Unit 42 Researchers Discover Multiple Espionage Operations Targeting Southeast Asian Government
Unit 42 attributes three espionage clusters targeting a Southeast Asian government to Stately Taurus, Alloy Taurus, and Gelsemium APTs.
Unit 42 investigated espionage attacks starting in late 2022 against multiple governmental entities in a Southeast Asian country, including critical infrastructure, public healthcare, financial administrators, and ministries. Analysis revealed three distinct clusters: CL-STA-0044 attributed to Stately Taurus (Mustang Panda), CL-STA-0045 to Alloy Taurus (GALLIUM), and CL-STA-0046 to Gelsemium. The first cluster used a ToneShell backdoor variant, ShadowPad, China Chopper web shells, Impacket, and credential dumping tools across roughly Q1 2021 to Q3 2023. All three operated with distinct tools, infrastructure, and long-term surveillance tradecraft consistent with APTs.
CVE-2026-34486: Apache Tomcat EncryptInterceptor Fail-Open Bypass
Technical analysis shows CVE-2026-34486 is a one-line fail-open regression in Tomcat Tribes enabling unauthenticated RCE via Java deserialization.
CVE-2026-34486 is a fail-open regression in Tomcat's Tribes EncryptInterceptor, introduced while fixing the CVE-2026-29146 padding-oracle flaw; Apache rated it Important and NVD scores it 7.5 High. Decryption failures are now forwarded to an unfiltered ObjectInputStream, and public PoC repositories demonstrate unauthenticated RCE on default port 4000 when clustering, the EncryptInterceptor, a reachable receiver and deserialization gadgets are all present. Affected releases 9.0.116, 10.1.53 and 11.0.20 are fixed in 9.0.117, 10.1.54 and 11.0.21; Tomcat 8.5 is unaffected.
Persistent Attempts at Cyberespionage Against Southeast Asian Government Target Have Links to Alloy Taurus
Alloy Taurus (GALLIUM) compromised Southeast Asian government networks from 2022 to 2023 using Exchange web shells and undocumented .NET backdoors Reshell and Zapoa.
Unit 42 tracked persistent multiwave intrusions at a Southeast Asian government starting in early 2022 and continuing through 2023, attributing the activity with moderate confidence to Alloy Taurus (aka GALLIUM), a Chinese state-aligned espionage group. Attackers exploited Exchange Server vulnerabilities to deploy web shells including China Chopper, then ran reconnaissance with Fscan and WebScan, created administrative accounts, and installed undocumented .NET backdoors named Reshell and Zapoa. They established resilience by installing SoftEther VPN, brute-forced Active Directory credentials with Kerbrute, and dumped credential stores with GoDumpLsass and LsassUnhooker. The campaign reflects long-term espionage tradecraft to maintain a foothold.
Fake Conferences, OAuth and WhatsApp: Inside Russia’s New Espionage Tactics
Google tracks three Russia-linked espionage clusters abusing OAuth, app passwords, and device code phishing against Western researchers and diplomats.
Google's Threat Intelligence Group documented three suspected Russia-linked clusters, UNC6293, UNC7005, and UNC5976, abusing legitimate authentication flows. UNC6293, a likely APT29/ICE RELIC sub-cluster, impersonates US State Department officials in app password and OAuth phishing targeting fewer than five victims at a time. UNC7005, tracked by Microsoft as STORM-2945, spoofs the GLOBSEC conference, runs device code phishing against Microsoft and WhatsApp accounts, and deploys VIDAR and AtomicStealer infostealers. Targets include researchers, academics, diplomats, think-tank analysts, and defense personnel in Europe and the United States.
Going with the Flow(s): Distinct Clusters Target Individuals of Interest to Russia
Suspected Russian clusters abuse OAuth and authentication flows to phish academia, defense, government, and think tank targets across Europe and the US.
Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) is tracking three distinct suspected Russian cyber espionage clusters abusing legitimate authentication flows. Newly detailed clusters UNC7005 and UNC5976 conduct phishing, abuse OAuth flows, and/or deploy malware, alongside previously reported UNC6293 phishing operations. Targets include individuals in academia, aerospace and defense, governments, and think tanks across Europe, as well as academia and think tanks in the United States.
Cisco FMC flaws exploited by ransomware gang, state-sponsored hackers
Cisco Talos confirms ransomware and state-sponsored groups exploited CVE-2026-20079 and CVE-2026-20316 in Secure Firewall Management Center, deploying Qilin ransomware and Cyclops Blink.
Cisco Talos identified three threat clusters (UAT-12197, UAT-11823, UAT-11988) exploiting CVE-2026-20079, a CVSS 10.0 authentication bypass, and CVE-2026-20316, a CVSS 5.3 static-credential flaw, in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center. Qilin affiliates used static credentials for reconnaissance and deployed Qilin ransomware; a Sandworm-linked cluster deployed a Cyclops Blink backdoor via a malicious license.tmp file; a third cluster stole credentials through a JSP web shell. Cisco has released hotfixes and urges immediate installation, with broader patches expected next week.
The Agentic AI threat cluster: Seven incidents, three actors, and what they mean for your exposure
Tenable links seven agentic AI attack incidents to three threat actors, including Taiwan's confirmed autonomous attack that exfiltrated over 2,564 personnel records.
Tenable's Research Special Operations team has tracked a cluster of seven agentic AI threat incidents since late July 2026, attributing the activity to three actors. Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs confirmed a near-autonomous AI cyber attack in July 2026 in which autonomous agents mapped 21 connected government systems, compromised 85 accounts, and exfiltrated more than 2,564 personnel records in approximately four days. The cluster also includes the JADEPUFFER campaign.
