FBI arrests Canadian cyber executive in extortion case
The FBI arrested Canadian CYPFER executive Edward Dubrovsky, 54, in Pennsylvania on sealed federal extortion charges reportedly tied to ShinyHunters.
The FBI arrested Edward Dubrovsky, 54, a Canadian cybersecurity executive, in Pennsylvania on October 8 and moved the case to the Eastern District of Texas, where reporting says he will be held pending a detention hearing. Sealed charges described in court coverage include conspiracy to threaten the confidentiality of information in order to extort money and Hobbs Act extortion. Sources disagree on his title: Krebs calls him a Cypfer co-founder now associated with CyberSteward, CyberScoop calls him CYPFER’s founder and former chief operating officer, and BleepingComputer says he co-founded CYPFER and was formerly associated with both firms. They also differ on the ShinyHunters link: Krebs says the charges are tied to that investigation, CyberScoop says reporting and an FBI statement align the arrest with a ShinyHunters intrusion of FBI systems, and BleepingComputer says reports connect the case to the crackdown but the FBI has not publicly confirmed his role. That intrusion is described as theft of FBI recruitment or jobs-portal data affecting thousands of employees through a third-party platform an Accenture contractor left unpatched. Krebs says ShinyHunters has taken more than $70 million this year, while BleepingComputer cites the FBI as saying the group and associates breached more than 140 organizations and collected over $70 million in the past year; Krebs alone also reports arrests of Pepijn van der Stap in the Netherlands and Saif Al-din Khader, known as Rey, in Jordan.
