Open-source tool removes Apple Intelligence models on macOS 27
RemoveMacAI, a free MIT-licensed CLI, disables Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and deletes on-device models, reclaiming roughly 10–12 GB.
RemoveMacAI is a free, MIT-licensed, open-source command-line tool released by Om Lahore that disables Apple Intelligence on Apple silicon Macs running macOS 27 and deletes downloaded on-device models through Apple's asset service. Sources disagree on recovered space: Help Net Security and The Verge cite about 12 GB from the developer, Cyber Security News says roughly 10–12 GB, and The Verge also notes one MacBook Air storage listing of 35.05 GB; The Verge says macOS 27 removed the single Settings off-switch. The tool requires Apple silicon and macOS 27, with version 0.2.3 or later needed on macOS 27.0.1, and does not support macOS 26 or earlier. It applies Apple's restriction keys via a user-approved configuration profile, leaves System Integrity Protection on, does not modify files under /System, and redirects model downloads to a closed local port so re-fetches fail. Disabled features include Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, summaries and predictions, and apps using Apple's Foundation Models framework, while Dictation and its speech models remain; Ars Technica adds that the developer says selected features can be removed while others are kept. A dry-run option, a status command that reports individual model sizes, and a revert command are included; Ars says revert deletes the profile so macOS redownloads models when a feature is turned back on, the project has about 1,700 GitHub stars, and changes are claimed to persist across updates.
