Google Disrupts XCPE Botnet on 1.3 Million Android Devices
November 2, 2026: CyberScoop reports the botnet spanned over 170 countries, affected telehealth, karaoke and digital signage devices from multiple manufacturers and that Google took legal action against domains and servers.
Google and partners dismantled the XCPE botnet infecting over 1.3 million Android TV set-top boxes, banned Videostrong from certification after it sold access to criminal affiliates.
Google Threat Intelligence and partners disrupted the XCPE backdoor in Android TV set-top box firmware, attributing the persistent malware to Shenzhen-based Videostrong Technology Co. The backdoor enrolled more than 1.3 million devices into a botnet for ad fraud, residential proxies and additional malware, with affiliates loading modules without user knowledge. Google banned Videostrong from certified Android devices, disrupted C2 domains affecting at least 10 million more and worked with Japan's National Police Agency along with security firms including TrendAI, Lumen, HUMAN Security, Plume and Synthient. The malware disabled Google Play Protect, cleared user agreements and required vendor action to remove.
