Six Apache Directory LDAP API flaws span 1.2 and 2.1
Newer notices add three important 2.1.x issues fixed in 2.1.9—StartTLS plaintext exposure (CVE-2026-103878), bcrypt cost-factor CPU exhaustion (CVE-2026-103880), and telephone-number CPU pinning (CVE-2026-103885)—beyond the two 1.2.x denial-of-service bugs and the schema deserialization flaw.
Six Apache Directory LDAP API flaws disclosed 2026-10-02 enable denial of service or potential code execution; fixes are 1.2.9 and 2.1.9.
Emmanuel Lécharny disclosed six Apache Directory LDAP API vulnerabilities on 2026-10-02, and none of the reports say exploitation has been observed. CVE-2026-102731 and CVE-2026-103552 affect 1.2.0 before 1.2.9 and are rated critical: a malicious peer or man-in-the-middle can exhaust the client JVM with a small BER response that allocates memory before data arrives, and an unbound client can crash the server decoder with a deeply nested search filter, which 1.2.9 fixes. CVE-2026-103877, in 2.1.0 before 2.1.9 and also rated critical, lets a rogue or compromised LDAP server or a pre-TLS man-in-the-middle answer loadSchema() with a schema object containing a serialized Java class that the client may load, with potential remote code execution. Three further issues in 2.1.0 before 2.1.9 are rated important and addressed by upgrading to 2.1.9: CVE-2026-103878 can expose plaintext if StartTLS follows a sent Search before the handshake finishes; CVE-2026-103880 can stall a server for hours while checking a bcrypt hash with a cost such as 30; and CVE-2026-103885 can pin one CPU core indefinitely on certain malformed telephone numbers, including on ApacheDS. The notices agree on affected ranges, severity, and the lack of reported exploitation; one spells the reporter’s surname without an accent.
- Emmanuel Lécharny disclosed six Apache Directory LDAP API flaws on 2026-10-02; none of the notices report in-the-wild exploitation.
- CVE-2026-102731 (critical) affects 1.2.0 before 1.2.9: a small BER response can force a large allocation and OutOfMemoryError, exhausting the client JVM.
- CVE-2026-103552 (critical) affects 1.2.0 before 1.2.9: an unbound client’s deeply nested search filter can overflow the server decoder stack; 1.2.9 is the stated fix.
- CVE-2026-103877 (critical) affects 2.1.0 before 2.1.9: a rogue server or pre-TLS man-in-the-middle can return a serialized Java class via loadSchema(), with potential client remote code execution.
- CVE-2026-103878 (important) affects 2.1.0 before 2.1.9: StartTLS begun after a Search is sent can return plaintext before the handshake completes.
- CVE-2026-103880 (important) affects 2.1.0 before 2.1.9: a stored bcrypt cost such as 30 can occupy CPU for hours during credential checks; Apache urges a bounded cost and upgrade to 2.1.9.
- CVE-2026-103885 (important) affects 2.1.0 before 2.1.9: crafted telephone numbers can pin one CPU core indefinitely on API users such as ApacheDS; 2.1.9 is recommended.

Coverage
oldest first · one row per article · UTCCVE-2026-102731: Apache Directory LDAP API: Denial of service via excessive memory allocation in BER decode
A tiny BER response can exhaust memory in Apache Directory LDAP API before 1.2.9, causing denial of service.
CVE-2026-103552: Apache Directory LDAP API: A unbound client can send a deeply nested search filter that overflows the stack in the server's decoder
Unbound clients can crash Apache Directory LDAP API before 1.2.9 with a deeply nested search filter.
CVE-2026-103877: Apache Directory LDAP API: Unsafe loading of Java code from LDAP schema elements
Apache Directory LDAP API before 2.1.9 can deserialize Java from a rogue LDAP schema, enabling potential remote code execution.
CVE-2026-103878: Apache Directory LDAP API: Injection of plaintext responses during StartTLS
Apache Directory LDAP API versions before 2.1.9 can leak plaintext responses when StartTLS follows a search.
CVE-2026-103880: Apache Directory LDAP API: Denial of service via excessive bcrypt cost factor in stored passwords
CVE-2026-103880 lets extreme bcrypt cost factors stall Apache Directory LDAP API servers for hours.
CVE-2026-103885: Apache Directory LDAP API: Denial of service via crafted telephone number values
