Google is about to remove free access to Gemini Flash and Pro

Google will restrict free Gemini users to Flash Lite and move Flash and Pro behind paid plans.

Starting October 9, free Google Gemini users will be limited to the Flash Lite model. Standard Gemini Flash will require the $4.99 monthly Google AI Plus subscription, which will also lose Gemini Pro. Gemini Pro and the Deep Think reasoning option will be limited to Google AI Pro at $19.99 or Ultra at $99.99 per month. Google said higher effort settings can consume usage limits faster.

Google's new Gemini tiers cut free users to its weakest model and lock $5/month subscribers out of Pro

Google will limit free Gemini users to Flash-Lite and drop Pro from the $4.99 AI Plus plan.

Starting in October 2026, Google is narrowing Gemini access for personal accounts. Unpaid users will get only Flash-Lite, down from 3.6 Flash and limited 3.1 Pro. AI Plus subscribers at $4.99 a month keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro, which requires AI Pro at $19.99 or AI Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99. The change resembles OpenAI's ChatGPT freemium setup and may precede a costlier Gemini 4 Argon.

Reasoning Models Are Accurate but Unsound on Identification

CERTID benchmark shows frontier reasoning models give unsound causal identification answers, with false-claim rates varying seventeen-fold across Gemini Flash, Gemini Pro, and GPT-5.5.

The paper introduces CERTID, a formal pipeline that certifies causal identification queries via the sound and complete ID algorithm and verifies returned formulas against structural causal models with exactly known interventional distributions. Three frontier reasoning models (Gemini Flash, Gemini Pro, GPT-5.5) were evaluated on 1,200 certified instances spanning graphs of 4 to 50 vertices. Accuracy proved a poor proxy for soundness, with false-claim rates on non-identifiable queries varying seventeen-fold across models. Models decided identifiability with 97-100% accuracy even on graphs generated after the strongest model's training snapshot.
