Apple is building photo verification for the people who need it most
Apple's Reference Image on iPhone 18 Pro captures signed sensor data to prove photo authenticity, adding SynthID support for AI images later.
Apple introduced Reference Image, an opt-in iPhone 18 Pro feature that captures signed per-pixel sensor data and develops it via Private Cloud Compute into an unalterable 'digital negative' for verifying whether photos have been edited. SynthID support for identifying AI-generated or edited images will arrive in a later software update. The phones go on sale September 18 in over 65 countries, with no availability in China at launch due to regulatory requirements and no capture on EU models.
