Remote Code Execution in Microsoft Office via Malicious PPSX Files (CVE-2017-8570)

CVE-2017-8570 is a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Office caused by improper handling of embedded OLE objects (composite monikers) in memory, and it is tracked separately from the related CVE-2017-0243. Memory Corruption RCE in Microsoft Office Equation Editor

A memory-corruption flaw (out-of-bounds write, CWE-787) in the legacy Equation Editor component (EQNEDT32.EXE) shipped with Microsoft Office 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016 allows remote code execution due to improper handling of objects in memory. An attacker triggers it by persuading a user to open a specially crafted document (for example an RTF or DOCX containing a malformed embedded equation object), causing the Equation Editor process to corrupt memory when the file is opened in Word; the user-interaction requirement is reflected in the CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/UI:R). Successful exploitation gives the attacker code execution in the context of the current user, with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CVSS 3.1 score 7.8, High). Any user of the affected Office versions, the Office Compatibility Pack, or Word on an unpatched system is affected. Use-After-Free RCE in Adobe Flash Player before 28.0.0.161

CVE-2018-4878 is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in Adobe Flash Player before 28.0.0.161, caused by a dangling pointer in the Primetime SDK's media-player handling of listener objects. An attacker triggers it by persuading a user to open attacker-controlled Flash content — typically a malicious SWF delivered via email, Office documents, or malvertising/exploit kits — because the CVSS vector (AV:L, UI:R) requires local user interaction. Successful exploitation yields arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running Flash. Anyone running a vulnerable Flash Player was exposed, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop/Server/Workstation users running Red Hat's packaged Flash plugin. The flaw was exploited as a zero-day in January–February 2018 (documented by McAfee and distributed alongside the Fallout exploit kit), and it remains in CISA's KEV with known ransomware use.

Do: Upgrade Adobe Flash Player to 28.0.0.161 or later, including Red Hat's flash-plugin package on RHEL Desktop/Server/Workstation. Microsoft Office documents created with the exploit builder kit dubbed ThreadKit now include the code for CVE-2018-4878 flaw exploitation.

At the end of March, security experts at Proofpoint discovered a Microsoft Office document exploit builder kit dubbed ThreadKit that has been used to spread a variety of malware, including banking Trojans and RATs (i.e. TrickbotChthonicFormBook and Loki Bot).

The exploit kit was first discovered in October 2017, but according to the experts, crooks are using it at least since June 2017.

The ThreadKit builder kit shows similarities to Microsoft Word Intruder (MWI), it was initially being advertised in a forum post as a builder for weaponized decoy documents.

Just after its appearance, documents created with the ThreadKit builder kit have been observed in several campaigns.

Now threat actors are using the ThreadKit builder kit to target the recently patched CVE-2018-4878 Flash vulnerability, experts started observing exploit code samples in the wild a few days ago.

Adobe addressed the CVE-2018-4878 in February after North Korea’s APT group was spotted exploiting it in targeted attacks.

The vulnerability could be exploited by an attack by tricking victims into opening a document, web page or email containing a specially crafted Flash file.

According to the researcher Simon Choi the Flash Player flaw has been exploited by North Korea since mid-November 2017. The attackers exploited the zero-day vulnerability in attacks aimed at South Korean individuals involved in research activity on North Korea.

Now the exploit was included in the ThreadKit builder, based on Virus Total hashes posted to Pastebin.

The security expert Claes Splett has published a video that shows how to build a CVE-2018-478 exploit in ThreadKit.

Proofpoint experts reported that in the last weeks, the exploit kit included new exploits targeting vulnerabilities such as the CVE-2018-4878 Adobe Flash zero-day and several Microsoft office vulnerabilities (i.e. CVE-2018-0802 and CVE-2017-8570).
