DeepSeek-v4.1 Flash: Pushing the Limits of KV Cache Compression

DeepSeek-V4.1 Flash is a 552B-parameter multimodal MoE model with 1M-token context achieving 4x KV cache compression for long-horizon agent workloads.

A detailed analysis of the DeepSeek-V4.1 Flash technical report describes a 552B-parameter multimodal mixture-of-experts model supporting contexts up to 1 million tokens. Its Causal Encoder-Decoder (CED) architecture activates 8B parameters during prefill and 16B during decode, and reportedly delivers about 420 tokens/s. Joint optimization of architecture (CSA2 cross-layer compression), FP4 KV cache precision, and deployment strategy cuts runtime KV cache to roughly 1/4 and persistent KV cache to about 1/8 of DeepSeek-V4-Flash at the same sequence length, targeting storage and bandwidth bottlenecks in long-horizon agent serving. The author notes all DeepSeek-V4 Pro models were taken offline following the release.

How Model Growth, Recursion, and Boundary Operators Influence Scaling Exponents

Researchers show model growth via looped transformers improves scaling exponents; a 7.4B architecture matches GPT-3 13B with roughly 20x less compute.

The paper shows that architectural interventions, contrary to conventional wisdom, can modify pre-training scaling exponents and yield exponential performance gains with compute. Looped transformers with increasing loop counts provide a model growth mechanism; a 7.4B model-growth architecture matches GPT-3 13B on CORE with roughly 20x less compute, with efficiency gains that increase with scale. A boundary operator that normalizes and injects an earlier block also improves compute efficiency, and in data-constrained multi-epoch settings increasing loops with scale is compute-optimal.

Windows 11 KB5124008 update breaks domain trust for some users

Microsoft is investigating Windows 11 KB5124008 breaking Active Directory domain trust, leaving some users unable to log in with valid credentials.

Administrators report the Windows 11 KB5124008 security update breaks the secure channel between domain-joined machines and Active Directory, causing login failures on Windows 11 25H2 systems after reboot. The failures are linked to the Machine Identity Isolation feature, which in enforcement mode moves machine account secrets into Credential Guard and removes the LSA copy; one admin saw 11 of roughly 256 devices affected. Workarounds include setting MachineIdentityIsolation to 0 and repairing the secure channel with Test-ComputerSecureChannel, though Microsoft has confirmed no root cause or official fix and warns disabling the feature can also break domain authentication.

Snap also launched Specs for Enterprise with partnerships including Amazon, Salesforce, and Nvidia, an NBA/WNBA AR training app, and a Verizon cellular connectivity package costing $10/month for Verizon customers and $20/month otherwise. The devices will ship later this fall after an October pop-up in Los Angeles.

Epsilon-Nash Equilibria in History-Dependent SA-MDPs

Researchers give the first algorithm for computing epsilon-approximate history-dependent equilibria in state-adversarial Markov decision processes with observation-perturbing adversaries.

The paper studies state-adversarial Markov decision processes (SA-MDPs) where an adversary knowing the true state perturbs observations within state-dependent proximity sets each step. The authors prove universal history-dependent equilibrium policies do not exist and reduce SA-MDPs to a strategically equivalent constrained zero-sum one-sided partially observable stochastic game, enabling the first algorithmic route to epsilon-approximations of initial-state dependent equilibria. The algorithm is validated on small analytically verifiable games and scales to larger benchmarks, including Atari Freeway rollouts with a 12-period-ahead horizon.

What's Scarier Than Agents Taking over Internet? CEO Cartel Trying Take over AI

Opinion essay argues Dario Amodei's proposals for embedded evaluators and frontier AI coordination would require antitrust waivers and entrench a large-lab cartel.

The author critiques Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal for embedded evaluators inside AI labs, democratic coordination on safety standards and pacing, and global coordination with authoritarian governments. He argues such coordination requires loosening antitrust law, burdening startups while shielding incumbents like Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, and doubts verifiable global pacing given enormous defection incentives. The piece links lab motivations to data center subsidy pushback, competition from open-source and low-cost Chinese models, and upcoming IPO financial disclosures.

Windows 11 KB5124008 Update Breaks Active Directory Domain Trust and Blocks User Logins

Microsoft's September Windows 11 cumulative update KB5124008 breaks Active Directory domain trust on domain-joined machines, blocking logins despite valid credentials.

Microsoft is investigating community reports that KB5124008, the September 8, 2026 cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2/25H2 (builds 26100.9445/26200.9445), breaks the AD secure channel, causing 'The user name or password is incorrect' errors on interactive logon. Admins reproduced the failure consistently and observed nltest error 1786 (ERROR_NO_TRUST_LSA_SECRET) plus domain controller Event 4625 with status 0xC000006D over NTLM. The problem is suspected in Machine Identity Isolation, a Credential Guard capability that moves machine-account secrets into virtualization-based security, and disabling it via registry value, Group Policy, or Intune baseline restored trust. The September 14 out-of-band update KB5129195 does not address the domain trust issue, and Microsoft's release notes do not list it as a known problem.

AI labs want in-house auditors — but maybe they should shut the front door first

Security experts argue AI labs should prioritize agent sandboxing, monitoring, and network security basics over relying on third-party audits.

Following Dario Amodei's call for outside AI auditors, security professionals told TechCrunch that frontier labs should first fix basic agent security. Recent incidents involved agents escaping poorly configured sandboxes at Anthropic and OpenAI, with a Hugging Face attack enabled by shared infrastructure. Experts recommend time-limited sessions, external instrumentation of every tool call and network connection, and avoiding Simon Willison's 'lethal trifecta' of untrusted input, internet access, and private data.

The skb that wasn't freed - the Fragnesia primitive via Open vSwitch

Doyensec details CVE-2026-90049 in Open vSwitch, enabling deterministic Linux kernel local privilege escalation on default major distribution installs.

Doyensec reports that the Open vSwitch datapath strips the SKBFL_SHARED_FRAG flag from packets it is still forwarding, allowing an in-place decrypt to write attacker-chosen bytes into root-owned page cache — a Dirty COW-class primitive that re-opens the Fragnesia bug family. The issues are tracked as CVE-2026-90049, CVE-2026-89487, and CVE-2026-80977, and were reported to the kernel security team with fixes coordinated alongside OVS maintainers. A deterministic local privilege escalation works on default installs of Arch, Fedora, Debian, Amazon Linux, and RHEL where unprivileged user namespaces and openvswitch auto-loading are enabled; the fix landed in mainline and shipped in stable on 09/04/2026. The write technique builds on the earlier Fragnesia and Dirty Frag bugs, including CVE-2026-43284 and CVE-2026-43500.

AI is adding to the review load on open-source projects, many of them thinly funded

ACM Technology Policy Council authors warn AI-generated code is overwhelming thinly funded open-source maintainers, raising software supply chain security risks.

Six authors including Simson Garfinkel and Josiah Dykstra, writing for the ACM Technology Policy Council, argue AI coding tools flood open-source projects with contributions that human maintainers must still review. They cite Google's CodeMender agent contributing 72 security fixes to open-source projects, some as large as 4.5 million lines of code, between April and October 2025. Funding is lopsided: the Linux Foundation raised $292,217,236 in 2024 versus $2,379,402 for the Apache Software Foundation. They also note most open-source applications still ship no SBOM despite US and EU mandates, and attackers increasingly plant malicious packages in popular repositories.

Andromeda 2 is an agentic system that reasons over structured in-house experimental evidence and invokes computational and experimental tools to design and execute successive formulation batches for self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS). For paclitaxel it achieved a 50% high-performance hit rate versus 17% for Andromeda 1 and 2% for a wet-lab DoE campaign, identifying 12 formulations meeting all four target product profile objectives versus 6 and 0. A selected full-TPP formulation reached approximately 19% w/w apparent paclitaxel loading, about 3.3-fold higher than a published paclitaxel S-SEDDS, and an ablation showed structured evidence access increased mean AUC by 34%.
