CVE-2026-82617: Apache OpenNLP: ReDoS / stack exhaustion in RegexNameFinderFactory built-in EMAIL and URL patterns

Apache OpenNLP CVE-2026-82617: built-in EMAIL and URL regex name-finder patterns enable regular expression denial-of-service and stack exhaustion in affected releases.

CVE-2026-82617 affects Apache OpenNLP opennlp-core 3.0.0-M1 before 3.0.0-M6 and opennlp-tools 2.0.0 before 2.5.12. The DEFAULT_REGEX_NAME_FINDER.EMAIL and DEFAULT_REGEX_NAME_FINDER.URL patterns in RegexNameFinderFactory contain ambiguous nested quantifiers. Applications using these built-in finders on attacker-controlled input can be forced into regular expression denial of service or stack exhaustion. Fixes shipped in opennlp-tools 2.5.12 and 3.0.0-M6.

AI deployments are stretching enterprise security to its limits

NetFoundry survey finds AI deployments will expand enterprise attack surfaces by 14%, with 90% of leaders worried about unapproved employee AI use.

NetFoundry's 2026 State of Secure AI Access survey found CISOs and CTOs expect AI deployments to grow attack surfaces by an average 14% within a year, with 90% concerned about employees using unapproved AI tools. Only 15% expressed high confidence that existing tools protect AI deployments, while non-human identities, static credentials and internet-facing APIs drive risk, and vulnerability exploitation now accounts for about 31% of breaches. Security reviews and network changes add an average eight days to AI deployments, and the median time to patch known exploited vulnerabilities has risen to 43 days.

Rust Supply Chain Attack on arrayref: Significant Overlap with DPRK Campaigns

Malicious versions of the Rust crate arrayref executed a compile-time backdoor, with infrastructure overlapping recent DPRK supply chain attacks on Mastra and axios.

Wiz researchers report that malicious versions of the arrayref Rust crate ran a backdoor during compilation, compromising developer build pipelines. The campaign's command-and-control infrastructure significantly overlaps with infrastructure used in recent DPRK supply chain attacks, including campaigns against Mastra and axios. Developers using affected crate versions should audit their builds and review dependencies.

USN-8736-2: Perl vulnerabilities

Ubuntu issued USN-8736-2 fixing two Perl regex flaws that could cause out-of-bounds heap access, denial of service, or security bypass on 24.04 LTS.

USN-8736-2 backports the Perl fixes from USN-8736-1 to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. CVE-2026-15534 involves out-of-bounds heap reads or writes when regular expressions handle large inputs, potentially causing denial of service or arbitrary code execution. CVE-2026-19487 causes incorrect regex matching with alternative branches, allowing security restrictions to be bypassed.

CVE-2026-70469: Apache NiFi: Improper Handling of Case Sensitivity for Content-Encoding in HTTP Requests

Apache NiFi CVE-2026-70469: duplicate or non-standard Content-Encoding headers bypass gzip request filtering in NiFi 2.11.0's REST API.

Apache NiFi disclosed CVE-2026-70469, rated High, affecting the Jetty-based REST API module (org.apache.nifi:nifi-jetty) in version 2.11.0. NiFi 2.11.0 disabled gzip-encoded HTTP requests and rejects those carrying the standard Content-Encoding header, but the framework enforcement filter fails to check multiple instances of the header and does not reject non-standard gzip identifiers, allowing crafted requests to evade the check. The disclosure was posted to oss-security by David Handermann.

PoisonedRefresh: A Fileless Linux Rootkit That Injects PHP Web Shells Into F5 BIG-IP APM Server Memory

Sophos details PoisonedRefresh, a fileless Linux rootkit that injects a memory-resident PHP web shell into F5 BIG-IP APM after exploitation of CVE-2025-53521.

On September 8, 2026, SophosLabs published an analysis of Linux/Agnt-IC (dubbed PoisonedRefresh by ESET) found in compromised F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager environments. Initial access leverages CVE-2025-53521, an unauthenticated RCE in BIG-IP APM when an access policy is configured on a virtual server; F5 confirmed exploitation and links the activity to cluster c05d5254, while Shadowserver observed 795 exposed vulnerable endpoints. A first stage hidden in a modified umount binary modifies /usr/sbin/httpd and SELinux configuration and embeds itself in BIG-IP upgrade images for persistence. The second-stage ELF intercepts __libc_start_main, hooks apr_dso_load, and injects a PHP web shell into libphp memory via mmap manipulation, leaving no disk artifacts, and exposes a /bin/bash shell via a local UNIX domain socket instead of a TCP port.

Sandworm-Linked Cyclops Blink Returns With Network Scanning and Packet-Sniffing Capabilities

Sophos uncovers a 64-bit Cyclops Blink variant on hacked Cisco FMC appliances, adding internal network scanning and selective packet capture; linked to Sandworm.

Sophos CTU analyzed a new 64-bit x86-64 Cyclops Blink implant (timezone_check) deployed on Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center appliances compromised via CVE-2026-20079 authentication bypass and CVE-2026-20316 low-privileged login. The activity is assessed with high confidence as Russian-nexus, with a moderate-confidence link to Sandworm (IRON VIKING, also tracked as Seashell Blizzard). The implant runs a parent controller plus five worker modules, masquerades as [kworker/0:1], persists via SysV init scripts at /lib/tz/timezone_check, and beacons to hard-coded C2 89.34.96.56 over a custom TLS protocol on ports 43856 and 49172. New module 0x11 scans internal IPv4 networks for SSH, SMB, LDAP, VMware, HTTP/HTTPS and VPN services, while module 0x12 performs filtered packet capture that can expose cleartext credentials, cookies and tokens.

TerminalFix Uses Fake Cloudflare CAPTCHAs to Deploy Reverse

Microsoft details TerminalFix, a ClickFix variant using fake Cloudflare CAPTCHAs to make users run PowerShell payloads with reverse-tunnel implants.

Microsoft disclosed TerminalFix campaigns that direct users to run commands in Windows Terminal or PowerShell instead of the Run dialog, increasing the chance multi-line scripts execute. Compromised websites serve fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA verifications; the resulting PowerShell command downloads a ZIP with legitimate LockScreenContentServer.exe and rogue dui70.dll for DLL sideloading, retrieves payloads hidden in PNG images from attacker domains, persists via Registry Run keys and scheduled tasks, and performs domain trust and Active Directory reconnaissance. A Python-based reverse-tunnel implant (client.py) tunnels arbitrary TCP traffic over an encrypted WebSocket to gitnow[.]dev:443, giving attackers network-level proxy access that could enable privilege escalation, security-tool tampering, data theft or ransomware. Microsoft recommends AppLocker restrictions, PowerShell script block logging and ClickFix awareness training.

Redtail Payload Analysis [Guest Diary], (Wed, Sep 9th)

SANS guest analyst detonated a RedTail Linux sample from a DShield honeypot, finding process masquerading as php-fpm, monitoring-kill behavior, and a TCP listener.
