Top AI spenders cut per-employee costs by nearly 10 percent in August

Ramp's September AI Index shows top AI spenders' per-employee costs fell 9.7% in August as firms migrate from frontier models to cheaper standard models.

Ramp's September 2026 AI Index reports median per-employee AI spending at the top 1% of spenders fell 9.7% in August to $7,205, partly attributed to August vacations, falling token prices, and migration to cheaper models. The effective price per million tokens dropped 41% from its March 2026 peak to $0.68, and frontier models like Opus, Fable, and Sol fell from 53% to 45% of tokens consumed. Anthropic was paid for by 43.8% of US companies (up 0.34 points) versus 39.8% for OpenAI (up 0.09 points), while open-weight models remain marginal at 6.4% of AI-using firms.

12 Serverless Security Options Compared (2026): Features & Pricing

A buyer-focused comparison of twelve serverless security offerings concludes no standalone SKU is worth buying in 2026, with function protection bundled inside CNAPP contracts.

The scorecard compares twelve serverless security options on function-protection depth, pricing visibility, platform attach economics, multi-runtime coverage, and vendor viability. Microsoft Defender for Cloud tops the weighted scores at 4.75, with Prisma Cloud at 4.60 and Datadog at 4.55 noted for publishing clean per-function rates. The piece warns that Thundra and Epsagon are defunct and that most vendors bill functions inside platform units where costs are hard to see. It also references the Aqua Security Trivy supply chain incident and Google's finalized acquisition of Wiz as market context.

The 12 Best Extended Detection & Response (XDR) Platforms, Compared and Priced

Buyer's guide compares 12 XDR platforms, favoring Microsoft Defender XDR, Stellar Cyber and CrowdStrike, and warns ingestion pricing inflates costs.

The article compares 12 extended detection and response platforms, distinguishing native XDR (CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Cortex XDR, Microsoft Defender XDR, SentinelOne) from open XDR (Stellar Cyber, Arctic Wolf, Rapid7). It argues data ingestion pricing, not per-endpoint fees, is the main budget risk and should be modeled before signing. It repeats the consolidation note that Sophos acquired Secureworks for approximately $859 million in February 2025, and flags that ExtraHop is NDR rather than full XDR.

Meta is paying to peek at how you use their latest AI model

Meta offers roughly 95% discounts on Muse Spark token pricing for customers who share prompts and outputs to train future models.

Meta's contributor pricing tier for its Muse Spark agentic coding model cuts input token costs from $1.25 to $0.10 per million and output tokens from $4.25 to $0.20 per million in exchange for access to user prompts and outputs. The move reflects labs' difficulty obtaining training data for agentic workflows, following Meta's paused employee computer-usage tracking initiative. Analysts note the incentive could push enterprises to clarify which data is shareable, and it fits broader price competition against Anthropic's Fable and Mythos models and OpenAI's July price cuts.

Show HN: Sunk Cost – How long until a local LLM rig pays for itself?

Show HN tool 'Sunk Cost' calculates when a local LLM rig breaks even versus falling API prices, factoring electricity cost and inference speed.

A Hacker News Show HN project called Sunk Cost models the payback period of buying local LLM hardware instead of paying API prices. Users can adjust assumptions like electricity cost ($/kWh) and API speed (tokens/second), and the model assumes API prices keep falling. Where local speed is unmeasured, it is estimated from memory bandwidth divided by bytes read per token, and labelled as an estimate.

The cybercrime supply chain has five stages, each with a price

In a Help Net Security video, Vigilant CEO Chris Nyhuis argues the lone ransomware attacker image is 15 years out of date and describes five businesses inside the cybercrime supply chain. The stages are infostealer harvesters, brokers who verify and resell access, ransomware-as-a-service operators, affiliates who run intrusions, and launderers. He notes stolen credential logs sell for $5 to $50, broker listings stay under $1,000, and stolen session cookies let attackers bypass multi-factor authentication.

What must happen for AI’s trillion-dollar gamble to pay off

Hyperscalers need 2.7x productivity gains by 2030 to justify nearly $1.1 trillion in AI data center spending, or risk bankruptcy and capital misallocation.

Wharton finance professor Jessica Wachter estimates hyperscaler AI expenditure will reach nearly $1.1 trillion through 2027 and that a 2.7x productivity increase is needed to break even by 2030. AI revenues of roughly $150-200 billion this year fall far short of about $750 billion in annual spending, with total investment from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle potentially exceeding $5 trillion over four years. Alphabet reported its first free cash flow deficit (about $5.9 billion) since its 2004 IPO due to AI infrastructure costs. Researchers warn that failed demand could make the buildout the largest capital misallocation in history, with depreciating GPU chips risking stranded assets.

[AINews] 10% worse, 100x cheaper, 10000x faster: Why Simulation is taking over

Latent Space argues AI training pipeline stages—rewards, data, teachers, curricula, environments—are flipping from human-made to model-made simulation.

Latent Space's AINews essay traces how each component of AI training has turned synthetic since 2022: reward models (InstructGPT, RLAIF), synthetic pretraining data (Microsoft Phi, NVIDIA Nemotron-4 340B), model teachers (Alpaca, DeepSeek-R1 distillation), and self-generated curricula (Self-Rewarding Language Models, SPIN). In 2026 it highlights Karpathy's autoresearch loop—700 experiments yielding 20 kept improvements, cutting GPT-2 training time from 2.02 to 1.80 hours—and Z.ai's GLM-5.3 fully synthetic RL environment, judging, and verification stack. It frames these shifts as 'simulation': 10% worse but 100x cheaper and 10,000x faster than human equivalents.

Distill Globally, Adapt Locally: Reasoning Distillation and Product-Type Test-Time Training for Scalable Trade-Up Recommendation

A distillation framework compresses LLM reasoning into a 15.5M-parameter trade-up recommendation model reaching AUC 0.941 with product-type test-time training.

The paper targets trade-up recommendation, which identifies higher-quality alternatives that preserve customer purchase intent. A retrieval-augmented few-shot LLM teacher generates labels and rationales that supervise a compact embedding-pair classifier; at inference the 15.5M-parameter student uses only two precomputed 768-dimensional embeddings with no LLM calls. On 8,352 annotated pairs, label-only training scored AUC 0.912, reasoning distillation reached 0.924, and product-type test-time training lifted it to 0.941 with average precision 0.940.
