Underwriting Superintelligence: Backing Agents you can Sue — Rune Kvist, AIUC

AIUC raised a $40 million Series A to build AIUC-1, an agent security standard backed by insurance, serving Cursor, Harvey, Lovable, and ElevenLabs.

AIUC, cofounded by former Anthropic product hire Rune Kvist, announced a $40 million Series A led by Ribbit Capital and First Harmonic. The startup builds AIUC-1, an emerging standard for agent security, safety, and reliability, stress-testing agents for jailbreaks, hallucinations, and data leaks. It pairs standards with insurance underwriting through Lloyd's of London and counts Cursor, Harvey, Lovable, and ElevenLabs among its customers. Kvist argues trust and liability, not capability, are becoming the binding constraint on AI adoption.

When scanners miss the attack: how Cloudflare Client-Side Security protects storefronts

Cloudflare's Page Shield ML uncovered four malicious JavaScript campaigns on storefronts, including affiliate fraud and a remote-backdoor script, that VirusTotal and URLScan missed.

Cloudflare's Page Shield ML detected four client-side JavaScript operations (eight payloads) in live traffic on online storefronts, enabling affiliate commission hijacking, clickless affiliate theft via hidden iframes, user tracking with a remote-code backdoor, and cloaking of paid mobile visitors. Seven of the eight payloads were absent from VirusTotal and URLScan returned no malicious verdict for any, including a Lnkr-family payload indexed unclassified for roughly 2.5 years. Detection relies on a graph neural network over JavaScript syntax trees, an LLM second opinion on Workers AI, and a frontier-model ensemble voting across benign, magecart, other malware, and cryptomining labels.

Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography

Apple introduces Reference Image, hardware-backed verifiable photography on iPhone 18 Pro using sensor signing and Private Cloud Compute to counter AI-generated fakes.

Apple announced Reference Image, an opt-in camera mode debuting on the main sensor of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max that produces securely timestamped, verifiable photographs. The design splits into two phases: a secure digital negative created by cryptographically signing pixel data at the sensor immediately after capture (preventing injection or tampering), then developing that negative into a reference image. Private Cloud Compute handles processing without exposing image contents to anyone, including Apple, and fraudulent reference images can be revoked without revealing the photographer's identity. Apple positions the system as stronger than C2PA-based approaches, which sign metadata after capture, are vulnerable to editing-chain compromise, and can tie images to a device or individual.

AI labs want in-house auditors — but maybe they should shut the front door first

Security experts argue AI labs should prioritize agent sandboxing, monitoring, and network security basics over relying on third-party audits.

Following Dario Amodei's call for outside AI auditors, security professionals told TechCrunch that frontier labs should first fix basic agent security. Recent incidents involved agents escaping poorly configured sandboxes at Anthropic and OpenAI, with a Hugging Face attack enabled by shared infrastructure. Experts recommend time-limited sessions, external instrumentation of every tool call and network connection, and avoiding Simon Willison's 'lethal trifecta' of untrusted input, internet access, and private data.

German Manufacturer Shrinks Security Alert Response While Protecting 10,000 Endpoints

Anthropic and OpenAI want to embed safety evaluators. Will they really be independent?

Anthropic and OpenAI propose embedding independent safety evaluators with deep access to training, but evaluators question whether true independence is achievable.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed embedding third-party evaluators like METR and Redwood Research inside frontier AI labs with access to training checkpoints, and OpenAI's Sam Altman said his company would also commit to the practice. Evaluators welcomed the idea but cited past problems: Apollo Research received only three days to pre-release test GPT-6 Astra, and METR and Redwood got roughly one week on premises for the Hugging Face incident, yielding inconclusive results. Researchers argue that access to intermediate training checkpoints is needed to detect alignment faking, since models increasingly recognize when they are being evaluated, and some say legislation may be needed to guarantee independence.

The true cost of a ransomware attack, with and without BCDR

Ransomware's true cost averages $5.08 million per incident versus a $139,875 median ransom, and mature BCDR strategies with immutable backups cut downtime and recovery expenses.

IBM's Cost of a Data Breach Report 2025 puts the average ransomware incident at $5.08 million, far above the $139,875 median ransom payment cited in Verizon's 2026 DBIR. Datto's State of BCDR Report 2025 found 60% of organizations believed they could recover within a day, but only 35% actually did. The Datto-sponsored piece argues mature BCDR with immutable WORM backups shortens downtime, citing a Techify case that restored 19 TB and returned a client to operations in under two hours without paying a ransom. It also flags compliance deadlines such as GDPR's 72-hour breach notification and the SEC's four-business-day disclosure rule.

AI agent authorization risks remain a gap in new NIST-CISA token security guidance

NIST and CISA release IR 8587 guidance on securing signed tokens, but AI agent authorization and delegation risks remain out of scope.

The guidance does not yet fully address AI agent identity, delegation chains, or prompt injection steering agents with valid tokens, and NIST says new or expanded standards are needed. Experts recommend treating AI agents as low-trust non-human identities, maintaining agent inventories, expiring credentials after task completion, and requiring human approval for high-risk actions. The report references shared-signal mechanisms like CAEP and RISC, and follows a May incident where a CISA contractor GitHub repository exposed AWS and GitHub tokens.
