Eleethub: A Cryptocurrency Mining Botnet with Rootkit for Self

Global sinkhole operation ends Sality botnet’s 23-year run

GuidePoint's GRIT team reports that 'Ransom Busters', likely a ransomware affiliate active across multiple RaaS operations including DragonForce, Settra and Anubis, proactively emails victims claiming it deleted their stolen data and backups for a $20,000-$60,000 fee, citing claimed access to RaaS administrative panels for over three years. Two analyzed intrusions shared tooling: SoftPerfect Network Scanner for reconnaissance, s5cmd-based exfiltration to AWS cloud storage, an RMM tool installed via PowerShell, a backdoor account with password 'Numlock!123' and the same attacker hostname DESKTOP-BBETH6K. Separately, GRIT detailed UNC6671's (Cordial Spider) adversary-in-the-middle vishing operation running since April under five extortion brands, with more than $8 million across 15 Bitcoin wallets, an average of $600,000 per payment, and 78 phishing sub-domains across 76 organizations, 40% in financial services.

Search results are sending people to fake Bitrefill checkouts

Scam sites impersonating Bitrefill's crypto checkout appear in search results, tricking victims into sending up to $1,990 in crypto directly to scammers.

Malwarebytes documents a cluster of lookalike domains copying Bitrefill's gift card checkout, surfaced via search engine results rather than email. Victims choose an amount up to $1,990 and pay in Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, USDT, Solana, or Litecoin to scammer-controlled addresses, with no recourse since crypto payments are irreversible. Domains use typosquatting and Punycode/IDN homoglyph tricks, and the fake sites run commercial analytics software to measure and optimize victim conversion. Bitrefill's security team is working with takedown specialists to remove the sites.

Legacy Lenovo login opens 5,000 Dropbox accounts to attackers

Dropbox warned about 5,000 users that attackers abused a legacy Lenovo ID login integration to access accounts and files between August 4 and 21.

Attackers exploited an integration allowing Dropbox access via Lenovo IDs, registering Lenovo IDs with Dropbox users' email addresses due to a flaw in Lenovo's email verification process. The compromise lasted from August 4 to 21; attackers accessed files belonging to fewer than a third of the roughly 5,000 affected users, none of whom had 2FA enabled. Bitcoin security company Casa co-founder Jameson Lopp reported attackers attempted to access one locally encrypted file. Dropbox expired all Lenovo ID sessions, severed the integration link, and urged affected users to reset passwords and enable 2FA while Lenovo's investigation continues.

Berlin refuses to be blackmailed after network breach

Rhysida extorts Berlin's state government after stealing 5.79 TB across 1.44 million files, demanding roughly 2 million euros in bitcoin.

Berlin's state government confirmed an extortion attempt after data theft from its administrative network between August 7 and 12, with affected departments disconnected only on August 14. The Rhysida ransomware gang lists 5.79 TB across 1.44 million files on its leak site, including HR files, contracts, 148 IBANs, personal data on 12,076 individuals, and plaintext credentials from internal systems including Berlin's leadership. Der Spiegel reports a 30 bitcoin demand of about 2 million euros; officials say the city will not pay and investigators include the State Criminal Police Office and federal agencies. Forensics revealed additional leaks in the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment, while the Berlin House of Representatives election environment is reported secure.

Trezor Says 347,000 Users Received Phishing Emails After Brevo Hack

Attackers abused Brevo's SAML SSO to access 138 accounts, sending phishing emails to 347,000 Trezor customers and exfiltrating contacts from 43 accounts.

Trezor said 347,000 of its customers received phishing emails with the subject line 'Critical Security Alert: STM32 Entropy Vulnerability' after the attacker compromised the Brevo marketing platform. Brevo said the intruder created an account, enabled SAML SSO, and used its own identity provider to access 138 accounts, exfiltrating contacts from 43 of them. Trezor reported 2,500 users clicked the malicious link before the site was taken offline 20 minutes after detection; potential fund losses are unknown. Swiss wallet maker BitBox and crypto tax calculator CoinTracking also appear affected, and Trezor separately disclosed a ShipMonk breach now affecting roughly 81,000 people.

Operation ASTERIX: Anatomy of a Crypto Fraud Pipeline

Rapid7 exposed infrastructure behind a cryptocurrency fraud pipeline using phishing panels, voice-dialing scripts, fake wallets, and AI coding assistants.

Rapid7 researchers identified an exposed web directory on infrastructure used to support a cryptocurrency fraud operation tracked as Operation ASTERIX. The server contained raw phone-number datasets, account-validation tools, enriched lead records, phishing panels, voice-dialing scripts, fake wallet applications, persistence mechanisms, and Telegram exfiltration code. Recovered prompts, shell history, and project files show the operator relied on AI coding assistants to package Electron applications, obfuscate code, troubleshoot builds, and modify phishing infrastructure.
