Metasploit Wrap Up: This One Goes to Sixteen!

Metasploit adds 16 modules including 10 exploits, five covering CISA KEV vulnerabilities in Cisco, SonicWall, PaperCut, JetBrains and Langflow.

Rapid7's weekly Metasploit update ships 16 new modules, 10 of them exploit modules, with five targeting CISA KEV entries. New exploits cover Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center auth bypass (CVE-2026-20079), a SonicWall SMA1000 SSRF-to-root RCE chain (CVE-2026-83548/CVE-2026-83549), JetBrains TeamCity deserialization RCE (CVE-2026-63077), PaperCut NG/MF chain (CVE-2026-81578/CVE-2026-82078), and Langflow authenticated RCE (CVE-2026-19295). The SonicWall and PaperCut chains were reported as actively exploited zero-days, and a new ESC8 relay module exploits CVE-2026-20929 against AD CS Web Enrollment.

Hackers Steal Active Directory Password Hashes Without Attacking Domain Controllers Directly

Attackers use the DCSync technique to impersonate domain controllers and harvest AD password hashes and Kerberos keys without directly compromising domain controllers, Trellix warns.

Per Trellix, threat actors increasingly abuse Active Directory replication via DCSync, using privileged credentials to invoke DRSGetNCChanges and retrieve NTLM password hashes and Kerberos key material without running code on domain controllers. Capturing the krbtgt account hash enables forging Golden Tickets for persistent, highly privileged domain access. Because malicious replication traffic mimics legitimate DRS/RPC activity, defenders should monitor Windows Security Event ID 4662, restrict replication permissions, and investigate replication requests from non-domain-controller systems.

Google Chrome Zero-day Vulnerability Exploited in the Wild (CVE-2026-87491)

Google patched actively exploited Chrome V8 out-of-bounds write CVE-2026-87491; CISA added it to KEV with a September 23 patch deadline.

Google fixed 230 Chrome vulnerabilities in its stable channel update, including CVE-2026-87491, an out-of-bounds write in the V8 JavaScript engine being exploited in the wild. The flaw, reported by Jihyeon Jeong of Compsec Lab, Seoul National University, is the seventh Chrome zero-day patched by Google in 2026. It affects Chrome versions before 153.0.8010.36, and CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog urging patching before September 23, 2026. Users should upgrade to Chrome 153.0.8010.36 (Linux) or 153.0.8010.36/.37 (Windows/Mac); Qualys customers can detect vulnerable assets with QID 388666.

Microsoft Plugs Nearly 1,000 Security Holes

Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday fixes a record 974 flaws, including two actively exploited Windows zero-days and critical DNS and Windows Shell bugs.

Microsoft released fixes for 974 vulnerabilities, its largest-ever monthly patch batch, bringing the 2026 total above 2,600. Two zero-day privilege elevation flaws, CVE-2026-81963 and CVE-2026-85880, are being actively exploited. Critical bugs include CVE-2026-69730, an unauthenticated DNS weakness in Windows Server 2012 onward and Windows 10 deemed likely to be exploited, and CVE-2026-69829, a CVSS 9.8 Windows Shell remote code execution flaw requiring no privileges or user interaction. Microsoft and other vendors credit AI-assisted discovery for the growing patch volumes.

Google Chrome Zero-day Vulnerability Exploited in the Wild (CVE-2026-85046)

Google patched 12 Chrome flaws including in-the-wild V8 zero-day CVE-2026-85046; CISA added it to the KEV catalog.

Google released Chrome 152.0.7977.82/.83 for Windows and Mac (152.0.7977.82 for Linux) fixing 12 vulnerabilities, including CVE-2026-85046, a type confusion flaw in the V8 JavaScript engine being exploited in the wild. CISA added CVE-2026-85046 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a patch deadline of September 18, 2026. This is Chrome's sixth zero-day patched in 2026, following CVE-2026-2441, CVE-2026-3909, CVE-2026-3910, CVE-2026-5281 and CVE-2026-11645. The other 11 fixes include use-after-free, out-of-bounds, race condition and input validation flaws in Skia, WebGL, DevTools, Network, Compositing and other components.

Mirage2FA Surge Hits 4,500 US and EU Companies, Abusing Microsoft 365 Login Flows

Mirage2FA phishing-as-a-service campaign hit ~4,500 organizations, mostly US, stealing Microsoft 365 passwords and session cookies to bypass 2FA.

ANY.RUN research links the Mirage2FA phishing-as-a-service toolkit to 4,532 unique organization email domains between 2024 and 2026, with the US accounting for 63.7% of victims. The kit uses adversary-in-the-middle login flows to harvest credentials and session cookies, bypassing MFA on Microsoft 365 accounts. Researchers recorded more than 9,000 potential compromise events and estimated 48% of targeted email addresses were potentially compromised. Hijacked sessions extend to SSO-connected services, enabling impersonation, fraud and further compromise.

Decline in Rig Exploit Kit

Rig exploit kit activity dropped roughly 75% after the pseudo-Darkleech and EITest campaigns stopped using EKs, reflecting an overall decline in exploit kit activity.

Rig EK activity fell sharply in 2017: the pseudo-Darkleech campaign disappeared at the end of March, cutting Rig traffic about 50%, and the EITest campaign switched to tech support scams in late April, cutting another 50% in May. Broader causes include a shrinking browser target base, no major EK zero-day in over a year, and community takedowns of domain shadowing infrastructure. Criminals are shifting to malspam, social engineering schemes like fake HoeflerText notifications, and tech support scams.
