SharePoint CVE-2026-55040 Comes Under Attack Following Public Exploit

Attackers are actively exploiting critical SharePoint authentication bypass CVE-2026-55040 (CVSS 9.1) days after Rapid7 released a public PoC.

CVE-2026-55040 is a critical authentication bypass (CVSS 9.1) in SharePoint Server Subscription Edition that lets unauthenticated attackers forge JWT tokens and impersonate any user, including administrators. Microsoft patched it in July 2026 Patch Tuesday, but Rapid7 published a technical write-up and Python PoC on GitHub on August 12, and Defused quickly observed attackers running the PoC against SharePoint honeypots. KEVIntel recorded 12 exploitation attempts since July 19, with eight occurring on August 12-13 from IP addresses in Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Taiwan and the U.S. Admin-level SharePoint access exposes documents and data modification and can serve as a foothold into broader Microsoft 365 infrastructure; unpatched instances should apply the July update immediately.

Microsoft Patches Record 974 Flaws, Including Two Exploited Windows Zero-Days

Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday fixed a record 974 flaws, including two Windows privilege-escalation zero-days actively exploited and added to CISA's KEV catalog.

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday addressed a record 974 vulnerabilities (999 including 25 non-Microsoft CVEs), with over 110 rated critical; 723 affect Windows and 111 affect Office. Two Windows privilege-escalation zero-days are actively exploited: CVE-2026-85880, an ALPC heap-based buffer overflow, and CVE-2026-81963, an improper link resolution flaw in the Windows Update Stack, both allowing attackers to gain SYSTEM privileges. CISA added both flaws to its KEV catalog, giving federal civilian agencies until September 22, 2026 to apply fixes. Volexity, Proofpoint, MSTIC, and independent researchers were credited with the reports; notable additional fixes include network-reachable RCEs in Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, Remote Desktop Services, DNS, and DHCP.

Hacked HBO Max Reddit Account Used for Malware Delivery via ClickFix Attack

Attackers hijacked HBO Max's verified Reddit account to push 108 malicious ads delivering AMOS and Amatera infostealers via ClickFix prompts.

Threat actors compromised the official u/hbomax Reddit account and ran 108 malicious ads over 48 hours in a campaign tracked as PasteSwitch, directing users to a fake hbomaxx[.]us site. ClickFix prompts tricked macOS users into running curl | zsh payloads (MacSync, AMOS Helper, fake wallets) and Windows users into executing MSHTA/PowerShell delivering Amatera Stealer. AnimateClipper and ZigClipper clipboard hijackers swapped cryptocurrency addresses using a blockchain-hosted C&C active since early 2026. Reddit suspended the ads after notification.

CISA Adds Two Known Exploited Vulnerabilities to Catalog

CISA added actively exploited PaperCut NG/MF flaws CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 to the KEV catalog, mandating federal patching.

CISA added two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog based on evidence of active exploitation: CVE-2026-81578 (PaperCut NG/MF missing authentication for critical function) and CVE-2026-82078 (PaperCut NG/MF unsafe reflection). Under Binding Operational Directive 26-04, Federal Civilian Executive Branch agencies are required to prioritize and apply these updates. The KEV listing signals observed exploitation of the PaperCut print management platform.

Three JFrog Artifactory Flaws Exploited for Backdoor Deployment

Wiz reports multiple actors chaining three JFrog Artifactory auth flaws to gain admin and deploy backdoors; CISA added all three CVEs to KEV.

Wz reports threat actors exploiting CVE-2026-42018, CVE-2026-42016, and CVE-2026-82329 in self-hosted JFrog Artifactory instances to bypass authentication and gain administrative privileges. Between August 15 and September 8, 2026, multiple actors chained CVE-2026-42018 and CVE-2026-42016 to mint anonymous-user tokens, escalate privileges, create persistent admin accounts, install malicious plugins for code execution, and drop second-stage payloads. From early September, CVE-2026-82329 was exploited for configuration exfiltration, cluster key theft, token minting, and SSH key attachment to attacker-created accounts. CISA added all three CVEs to its KEV catalog, giving federal agencies two weeks under BOD 26-04 to patch to versions 7.161.20, 7.146.38, 7.133.29, 7.125.20, 7.117.28, or 7.111.21.

Hackers Actively Exploit Critical WooCommerce Plugin Vulnerability to Upload PHP Backdoors

Attackers actively exploit CVE-2026-27540 (CVSS 9.8) in WooCommerce Wholesale Lead Capture plugin to upload PHP webshells; patch shipped in version 2.0.3.2.

CVE-2026-27540 (CVSS 9.8) in the WooCommerce Wholesale Lead Capture plugin affects versions 2.0.3.1 and earlier across roughly 6,000 active installations. The unauthenticated AJAX handler wwlc_file_upload_handler trusts a client-supplied file_settings allowlist, letting attackers upload shell.php for remote code execution. Wordfence has blocked more than 100,000 exploit attempts since disclosure, with spikes in June, July, and August 2026. The vendor fixed the flaw in version 2.0.3.2.

CVE-2026-34908: Ubiquiti Networks UniFi OS Server access control ...

CVE-2026-34908, a CVSS 10.0 access-control bypass in Ubiquiti UniFi OS, was added to CISA's KEV catalog amid reported active exploitation.

CISA added CVE-2026-34908 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on June 23, 2026, with remediation due June 26 under BOD 26-04 guidance. The CVSS 10.0 improper access control flaw (CWE-284) in Ubiquiti UniFi OS allows unauthorized system changes without authentication. Multiple news reports referenced by the page describe the max-severity UniFi flaws being exploited in attacks, and an official patch is available.

GeoServer Zero-Day Is Already Being Probed. That’s the Problem

Unpatched GeoServer zero-day enabling SQL injection and possible RCE is being actively probed across exposed systems.

A zero-day in GeoServer's jsonArrayContains functionality allows unauthorized SQL injection and, in some configurations, remote code execution. Disclosed on August 12, 2026 without a CVE ID, it drew hundreds of exploitation probes from watchTowr within hours. No patch is available yet; GeoServer was previously mass-exploited via CVE-2024-36401.

N-able ships second N-central hotfix as attackers keep exploiting CVE-2026-18577

N-able shipped a second N-central hotfix as attackers actively exploit authentication bypass CVE-2026-18577, attributed to ransomware group Storm-1175.

N-able released Hotfix 2 (N-central 2026.3.1.10) to counter ongoing exploitation of CVE-2026-18577, an authentication bypass that evades the patch for the earlier CVE-2026-18556; exploitation was first detected on August 1, 2026. Post-exploitation includes using the Take Control feature to reach managed endpoints, registering a Cloudflare tunnel service for persistence, creating a 'veeam' domain account, resetting admin passwords, and disabling Microsoft and Sophos security tooling. Microsoft analysts link the activity to Storm-1175, which now deploys a new StormEncryptor ransomware strain instead of Medusa, often reaching data exfiltration and ransomware within days. Sophos and Huntress expanded the IOCs and warned that partners who patched late should treat environments as potentially compromised.
