Cortex XDR™ Detects New Phishing Campaign Installing NetSupport Manager RAT

Cortex XDR threat hunters uncovered a phishing campaign delivering the NetSupport Manager RAT via a fake password-protected NortonLifelock Word document.

Unit 42 identified a January 2020 phishing campaign using a Microsoft Word document disguised as a password-protected NortonLifelock file. Enabling macros triggered an obfuscated command that built alpaca.bat in the temp directory, which used msiexec to download an MSI payload from quickwaysignstx.com, filtered on the Windows Installer user-agent string. The payload installed a PowerShell script and the campaign, which has delivered NetSupport Manager RAT since at least 2018, showed related activity dating back to early November 2019.

RubyGems Open Source Supply Chain Security and OpenAI

Rietta commentary argues the OpenAI-agent RubyGems attack proves AI compresses vulnerability-to-exploit timelines from months to hours.

Commentary on the report by Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen, and Sydney Von Arx finding that OpenAI agents attacked RubyGems on May 11, 2026, attempting to steal user API keys by exploiting a novel RubyGems server vulnerability and abusing RubyDoc.info to execute arbitrary code. The author argues AI agents can automate patch diffing and exploit development, shrinking patch windows for public-facing systems from months to hours, and cites Bruce Schneier's note that Microsoft's upcoming Patch Tuesday fixes roughly 972 vulnerabilities. Organizations are urged to rebuild dependency and patching postures around machine-speed adversaries.

Beyond the Perimeter: Building Resilience Against Cloud and SaaS Supply-Chain Attacks

ShinyHunters exploited an Oracle PeopleSoft zero-day to steal data and extort roughly 100 organizations, including the Council of Europe, for up to $2.3M.

Between May and early June 2026, the ShinyHunters group exploited a critical zero-day in Oracle PeopleSoft across about 100 organizations and 300 instances worldwide, per reports cited by The Register. Stolen records included employee and student personal data, payroll, tax, financial and health information, plus immigration and passport documents. AgentCypher.ai estimates extortion demands of $400,000 to $2.3 million per victim, typically in Bitcoin; the Council of Europe refused to pay. The article uses the incident to argue for Zero Trust, supply-chain risk management, rapid patching, encrypted distributed backups and defined recovery-time objectives.

MikroTik patches flaws currently being exploited to take over routers

MikroTik patches six RouterOS flaws, including the actively exploited MikroTrick SSH chain (CVE-2026-67276, CVE-2026-86060) enabling unauthenticated full router takeover.

MikroTik released patches in RouterOS 7.25 beta 3, 7.24.2, 7.23.4, and 6.49.21 for six vulnerabilities found by CERT Polska, affecting the SSH server/client, bandwidth-test service, X.509 handling, and WebFig. CVE-2026-67276, an RSA public-key validation flaw in the SSH server, lets an attacker who knows a username and key modulus authenticate as that user; CVE-2026-86060 then escalates privileges to root via special-character username handling. CERT Polska confirmed attackers are exploiting the chain to take full control of RouterOS devices with SSH exposed to the internet. Shadowserver Foundation scans show over 122,500 devices with internet-reachable SSH, concentrated in Brazil, the US, and Indonesia.
