Chaotic Eclipse Released ShieldCrash, A PoC For Microsoft Defender Zero-Day

Researcher Chaotic Eclipse released ShieldCrash, a PoC showing Microsoft Defender's CVE-2026-69414 patch is incomplete, enabling arbitrary file reads as SYSTEM.

Security researcher Chaotic Eclipse published ShieldCrash, a proof-of-concept exploit for the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine privilege escalation vulnerability CVE-2026-69414 (ShieldBreak). The PoC performs arbitrary file reads with SYSTEM privileges on all supported Windows versions, including systems running the September 2026 security updates and Malware Protection Engine version 1.1.26080.3. The researcher claims Microsoft's patch fixed several exploit paths but missed a specific condition that still enables the attack. His recent releases also include zero-day PoCs targeting Nvidia, Kaspersky, Avast, and CrowdStrike Falcon.

Risky Bulletin: BEC campaign steals €35 million from French notaries

Hackers stole over €35 million from 500+ French notary offices in a four-year BEC campaign; ANSSI spent two years helping evict the attackers.

A business email compromise campaign breached more than 500 French notary offices — about 7% of all French notaries per the Conseil Supérieur du Notariat — over four years, stealing more than €35 million by phishing initial access and silently modifying wire transfer details. France's cybersecurity agency ANSSI worked for two years behind the scenes to help notaries remove the persistent attackers, who had deep access; officials also feared hackers could issue fake notarized acts such as marriage certificates or forged real estate deals. No forged documents have been found so far, but notaries have added two-factor authentication and in-person requirements for banking details, and banks added extra checks in 2024. The newsletter also notes other incidents, including a $320 million Bitcoin extraction from Blockstream's Liquid Network and a JetBrains Cadence breach via TeamCity servers.

China-Linked Hackers Exploit Chrome-Windows Zero-Day Chain to Deploy GRIMWEDGE

Volexity attributes spear-phishing campaign exploiting Chrome-Windows zero-day chain to Chinese actors UTA0560 and APT31 deploying GRIMWEDGE and LONGTALE.

Volexity attributes a September 1, 2026 spear-phishing campaign targeting NGOs to China-linked UTA0560, which abused a reflected XSS flaw on a US university website to trigger a three-part exploit chain (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-87491, CVE-2026-85880) escaping the Chrome V8 and browser sandboxes to deploy the GRIMWEDGE JavaScript backdoor with reconnaissance, file management, and command execution capabilities. Magento StyleSmuggler zero-day exploited to deploy Linux backdoor

StyleSmuggler zero-day in Magento and Adobe Commerce is actively exploited in the wild to deploy a Rust-based Linux backdoor; fix not yet released.

A zero-day dubbed StyleSmuggler affecting all versions of Magento and Adobe Commerce is being actively exploited, with the first observed incident on September 4 on a fully patched site. The exploit injects PHP code via Magento's template system through a fake 'failed-payment' email to achieve code execution, installing a Rust-based backdoor disguised as kworker/u:8:0 or fc-cache with a 30-minute cron job for persistence. The backdoor communicates via TLS/WebSockets or UDP port 123 masquerading as NTP traffic, checks TracerPid to detect tracing, and can receive remote commands. Adobe confirmed it is working on a fix with no timeline; Sansec recommends disabling GraphQL as mitigation and monitoring for suspicious cron entries and kworker or fc-cache processes. SonicWall confirmed attackers are actively exploiting two previously undisclosed vulnerabilities in SMA 1000 SSL VPN appliances, affecting physical and virtual models 6210, 7210, and 8200v but not SMA 100 appliances or SonicWall firewalls. CVE-2026-83548 is a pre-authentication SSRF in the Appliance Work Place interface allowing remote unauthenticated attackers to gain unauthorized access to sensitive functionality, while CVE-2026-83549 is an OS command injection in the Appliance Management Console that can yield remote code execution under specific conditions for authenticated admins. The vendor urged immediate hotfix deployment, IoC review with technical support, and re-imaging or redeployment plus password and TOTP token resets on confirmed compromise. This is the latest in a series of zero-day attacks against SMA 1000 appliances following waves in late 2025 and June-July 2026.

PaperCut Zero-Day Exploited in Attacks, Affecting All NG and MF Versions

PaperCut warns of actively exploited zero-day RCE chain CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 affecting all PaperCut NG and MF versions.

PaperCut alerted customers that attackers are actively exploiting a zero-day affecting all versions of PaperCut NG and MF print management software, with confirmed customer incidents and an ongoing investigation. Emergency patches were released for v25 and v26, and the flaw was later identified as an exploitation chain of CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 enabling remote code execution. Shared IoCs include suspicious post-exploitation activity from pc-app.exe and missing, truncated or deleted server.log files with specific database errors. Users with internet-exposed PaperCut Application Servers are urged to immediately restrict access to trusted IPs; in 2023, CVE-2023-27350 (CVSS 9.8) in the same products was exploited by Lace Tempest to deliver Cl0p and LockBit ransomware.

Lazarus Used Post-Quantum Key Exchange to Deliver Zero-Day

Lazarus used a post-quantum key exchange to shield delivery of a Windows zero-day exploit, adding stealth to its campaign.

North Korean Lazarus Group malware used a post-quantum key exchange to protect the delivery of a Windows zero-day exploit. The technique adds a layer of stealth to the campaign's initial access, complicating detection and traffic inspection. It signals growing APT adoption of post-quantum cryptography in offensive operations.

Risky Bulletin: Russia tells data centers to deploy drone defenses

Russia ordered data center operators to deploy drone strike defenses under a Putin decree allowing temporary state takeover of unprotected critical infrastructure.

The Russian government instructed data center operators to deploy protections against drone strikes under a presidential decree signed by Putin that allows temporary state administration of critical infrastructure operators failing to defend against Ukrainian hacks and drone strikes. Although data centers are not formally critical infrastructure in Russia, the decree applies to them because other sectors depend heavily on cloud services; Russia has more than 180 data centers, over 80% in the European region within range of Ukrainian strikes. The digest also reports a Dropbox breach affecting nearly 5,000 accounts via the Lenovo ID integration, spyware attacks on at least 14 Serbians using NoviSpy or Pegasus, and a password recovery attack targeting hundreds of thousands of X accounts tied to the new X Money service. Other items include a 14-hour compromise of Coder's Cloudflare infrastructure delivering malicious Terraform modules, donor data breaches at Davayte and You Are Not Alone via the Stripe/WooCommerce integration, a $2.5M Aquifer crypto heist, and a TVING breach exposing data of almost 40 million accounts.

PaperCut NG/MF vulnerabilities exploited in zero-day attacks

PaperCut warns of active zero-day exploitation chaining CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 for pre-auth remote code execution in NG/MF print management.

PaperCut Software confirmed attackers are chaining two vulnerabilities in PaperCut NG and MF: CVE-2026-81578, an improper access control flaw in the web management interface allowing unauthenticated configuration changes, and CVE-2026-82078, unsafe dynamic class loading in database connection utilities enabling arbitrary Java bytecode execution. Huntress reproduced a pre-authentication remote configuration takeover and full RCE chain against PaperCut NG 25.0.11.75758 and observed limited exploitation at two customers, including post-exploitation whoami and ver commands. The vendor released Emergency Patch Release 2 with additional hardening and urged restricting Application Server web access to trusted IPs. In 2023, Clop and LockBit affiliates abused CVE-2023-27350 and CVE-2023-27351 in the same software.

Chaotic Eclipse Releases GenDigital Avast Antivirus ZeroDay PrettyPrague

Researcher Chaotic Eclipse released PrettyPrague, a PoC zero-day privilege escalation exploit against fully patched GenDigital Avast Antivirus.

Security researcher Chaotic Eclipse (also known as INFINITE NIGHTMARE or MSNightmare) published a PoC named PrettyPrague exploiting a zero-day privilege escalation flaw in Avast Antivirus. The PoC abuses a flaw in the Avast Sandbox to dump the Windows SAM database and spawn a SYSTEM-level shell, reportedly working on fully patched Avast and patched Windows 11 25H2. The researcher believes the flaw may also affect other GenDigital products such as AVG and Norton. It follows his recent HardBreacher PoC for a Kaspersky Endpoint Security privilege escalation flaw.
