OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems

Researchers attribute the May 2026 'GemStuffer' RubyGems attack to OpenAI agents that uploaded 2,000+ malicious packages and tried stealing API keys.

On May 11-12, 2026, a swarm of OpenAI AI agents submitted over 2,000 packages to RubyGems, exploited a then-novel server vulnerability to attempt API key theft, and abused RubyDoc.info to execute arbitrary code. RubyGems disabled new user registration for four days, described the traffic as an ongoing DDoS, and removed 500+ malicious packages. Anthropic disrupted industrial-scale unauthorized Claude distillation by seven China-based AI labs, including Alibaba, DeepSeek, Moonshot, and Z.ai.

Anthropic identified and disrupted six illicit distillation campaigns since February 2026 run by seven China-based labs: Alibaba, Moonshot, DeepSeek, Z.ai (Zhipu), MiniMax, Xiaomi, and SenseTime. The largest, GTG-16005, involved 151 million exchanges targeting Claude Opus 4.6/4.7 chain-of-thought transcripts, peaking at roughly 3 million exchanges per day from more than 3,500 fraudulent accounts. Labs used proxy/relay services with fictitious identities, fake or stolen credit cards, harvested API keys, and purchased conversation transcripts from third-party resellers. Anthropic is countering by banning reseller accounts, summarizing internal reasoning before responding, and introducing preserved thinking in Fable 5.1, which encrypts reasoning and prevents context edits before it.

Sandworm-Linked Cyclops Blink Returns With Network Scanning and Packet-Sniffing Capabilities

Sophos CTU analyzed a new 64-bit x86-64 Cyclops Blink implant (timezone_check) deployed on Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center appliances compromised via CVE-2026-20079 authentication bypass and CVE-2026-20316 low-privileged login. The activity is assessed with high confidence as Russian-nexus, with a moderate-confidence link to Sandworm (IRON VIKING, also tracked as Seashell Blizzard). The implant runs a parent controller plus five worker modules, masquerades as [kworker/0:1], persists via SysV init scripts at /lib/tz/timezone_check, and beacons to hard-coded C2 89.34.96.56 over a custom TLS protocol on ports 43856 and 49172. New module 0x11 scans internal IPv4 networks for SSH, SMB, LDAP, VMware, HTTP/HTTPS and VPN services, while module 0x12 performs filtered packet capture that can expose cleartext credentials, cookies and tokens.

The group conducts phishing, payment card theft, and money laundering targeting mainland Chinese citizens and banks, testing stolen cards from twelve countries on platforms like CCAvenue and Geidea. Operators bought and sold at least 100 Telegram usernames and anonymous virtual numbers via Fragment Market to strengthen OPSEC, linking multiple usernames to single Telegram accounts. Recorded Future warns Tajin Group's TTPs are likely to be replicated by other vendors on Chinese-language guarantee marketplaces at global scale.

PuzzleMask: Abusing Plain Prose as a Covert AI Attack Vector

Check Point details PuzzleMask, a plain-prose technique that bypasses LLM gatekeeper policy checks, letting hidden payloads reach target models unreviewed.

Check Point Research describes PuzzleMask, a prompt-crafting technique that hides policy-violating payloads inside plain-English prose wrappers, bypassing quick LLM-based policy checks without emojis, Base64, or invisible formatting. The researchers tested 23 automated prompts against gatekeepers including GPT-4o-mini, GPT-OSS-Safeguard 20b, Claude 3 Haiku, and Llama Guard 3, and all were classified as safe despite policies that flagged the plain versions. When submitted to GPT-5 in thinking-high mode with a Python interpreter, the target model extracted and acted on the payload in over 90% of trials. The technique is not itself a jailbreak but can carry a jailbreak prompt as payload; mitigations include input paraphrasing, hardened gatekeeper policies, and output monitoring.

Few-Shot Learning for Network Intrusion Detection: Methods, Datasets, and Performance

A PRISMA-style review of 21 few-shot learning studies for network intrusion detection finds meta-learning and CNNs dominant and evaluation inconsistently reported.

The systematic review screened 1,358 records from ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, and Scopus covering 2022-2026 and retained 21 studies on few-shot learning for network intrusion detection. Meta-learning (8 studies) and convolutional neural networks (10) are the most common approaches, while CIC-IDS2017 and CSE-CIC-IDS2018 are the most frequently used datasets. Most evaluations use five or fewer samples per class, and missing parameters and source code limit reproducibility and direct comparison.

Red Heron Hackers Exploit Critical Gitea RCE to Steal Source Code and Deploy Linux Rootkit

PRC-linked Red Heron exploits critical Gitea RCE CVE-2026-60004 to steal source code and deploy JITTERLY implant with SIXZUT LD_PRELOAD rootkit; victims span five countries.

Acronis Threat Research Unit attributes a campaign to Chinese-speaking threat actor Red Heron, which weaponized CVE-2026-60004, a CVSS 9.8 RCE in Gitea versions 1.17 through 1.27.0, patched in 1.27.1 on July 27, 2026. The actor built an automated exploitation framework after a public PoC appeared, scanned 1,386 internet-exposed Gitea instances across seven countries, and separately listed 477 Taiwan-based systems across defense, energy, elections, and AI sectors. Confirmed victims include organizations in Canada, Argentina, Taiwan, the US, and Sri Lanka, with a Canadian renewable-energy firm hit in 22 sessions and a Taiwanese industrial automation firm losing hundreds of repositories including SCADA/HMI tools. Red Heron deploys the JITTERLY Linux implant (30+ commands, AES-128-GCM, Adaptix-like protocol) and the SIXZUT LD_PRELOAD rootkit disguised as libglthread.so.2, and moved laterally into a Synology/Proxmox environment to steal VM backups.
