CISA decides weekly vulnerability bulletin isn't necessary anymore

CISA will discontinue its weekly vulnerability bulletin on September 28, pushing users toward KEV, alerts, and CVE data under risk-based prioritization.

CISA announced its weekly vulnerability bulletin will stop on Monday, September 28, as part of a shift from static CVSS severity scores to a modern, risk-based approach detailed in a June Binding Operational Directive. The directive prioritizes federal remediation based on exposure, exploitation evidence, control granted by exploitation, and whether exploitation can be automated. CISA directs bulletin subscribers to rely instead on its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, cybersecurity alerts and advisories, and the CVE catalog, requiring users to enable those subscriptions in GovDelivery or Granicus to avoid missing critical notices.

CISA Urges Organizations to Deploy Cyber Decoys to Detect Hackers Inside Networksnew

CISA's new guidance urges organizations to deploy cyber decoys like honeytokens and tripwires to detect attackers using valid credentials and living-off-the-land techniques.

CISA published 'Using Cyber Decoys to Strengthen Detection and Response' on September 16, 2026, advising decoy assets that appear legitimate but generate high-confidence alerts when accessed. It describes tripwires, breadcrumbs, and honeytokens such as fake usernames, passwords, API keys, and cloud access tokens, and recommends starting with low-complexity deployments like nonfunctional Active Directory accounts, decoy file shares, and isolated mimic hosts. The agency warns decoys must be segmented and nonfunctional to prevent attackers pivoting to real systems, and aligns decoy planning with MITRE Engage and ATT&CK.

AI agent authorization risks remain a gap in new NIST-CISA token security guidance

NIST and CISA release IR 8587 guidance on securing signed tokens, but AI agent authorization and delegation risks remain out of scope.

NIST, with CISA support, published 'Protecting Tokens and Assertions from Forgery, Theft, and Misuse' (NIST IR 8587), recommending continuous monitoring and tighter token lifecycle controls for SSO and API access. The guidance does not yet fully address AI agent identity, delegation chains, or prompt injection steering agents with valid tokens, and NIST says new or expanded standards are needed. Experts recommend treating AI agents as low-trust non-human identities, maintaining agent inventories, expiring credentials after task completion, and requiring human approval for high-risk actions. The report references shared-signal mechanisms like CAEP and RISC, and follows a May incident where a CISA contractor GitHub repository exposed AWS and GitHub tokens.

CISA Releases Guidance on Deploying Cyber Decoys

CISA issued guidance on deploying honeypots, honeytokens, and decoy systems to detect adversaries and gather threat intelligence in critical infrastructure.

CISA released guidance on deploying cyber decoys, including lures, tripwires, decoy artifacts, honeytokens, and honeypots, within critical infrastructure organizations to complement Zero Trust models. The guidance outlines a three-phase operational process of preparation, execution, and understanding, advising decoys be placed where users rarely interact and configured to produce high-fidelity alerts. It aims to help defenders detect adversaries who use legitimate credentials, native tools, and living-off-the-land techniques, while enabling cost-effective threat intelligence collection.

Cisco Secure Email Gateway Vulnerability Exploited in Attacks (CVE-2026-76461)

Cisco Secure Email Gateway flaw CVE-2026-76461 enables root command execution via crafted email SQL injection and is actively exploited, added to CISA KEV.

Cisco disclosed critical vulnerability CVE-2026-76461 in Secure Email Gateway, caused by insufficient validation in email parsing logic, allowing arbitrary SQL statements that lead to root-level command execution. CISA added the flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a patch deadline of September 17, 2026. The bug affects all SEG deployments regardless of configuration, with fixed releases including 15.5.5-014, 16.0.4-302, and 16.5.0-780. Defenders can check mail_logs for anomalous 'COPY ... TO PROGRAM' SQL statements to detect compromise.

Protecting Tokens and Assertions from Forgery, Theft, and Misuse: Implementation Recommendations for Agencies and Cloud Service Providers

NIST and CISA publish final interagency report with implementation guidance for protecting tokens and assertions from forgery and misuse.

CISA released a final NIST/CISA interagency report guiding federal agencies and cloud service providers on protecting identity assertions, access tokens, and cryptographic mechanisms underlying modern authentication and authorization. It addresses forgery, theft, and misuse of signed tokens that adversaries use for lateral movement and data access in hybrid and multi-cloud, SSO, federation, and API-based environments. The final version updates token validation, secrets management, and detection-at-scale guidance gathered via the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative, and supports Executive Order 14306 and Secure by Design principles.

Cisco patches Secure Email Gateway zero-day exploited in attacks

Cisco patches actively exploited Secure Email Gateway zero-day CVE-2026-76461 enabling unauthenticated root command execution; CISA adds it to KEV.

Cisco disclosed that a critical zero-day (CVE-2026-76461) in the email parsing logic of AsyncOS for Secure Email Gateway is being actively exploited, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL statements that lead to root-level command execution on virtual and physical appliances. CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog and ordered federal agencies to patch within three days, by September 17. Cisco also patched four other critical SEG/SEWM vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-76440, CVE-2026-76441, CVE-2026-20353, CVE-2026-76443) with no evidence of exploitation, and shared IOCs including suspicious SQL statements in mail_logs.
