Evaluating the NIST Bugs Framework Against CWE as a Successor for Automated Vulnerability Classification

NIST Bugs Framework evaluation shows it is more structured and automation-friendly than CWE for automated vulnerability classification, with gaps in attribute guidance.

The paper evaluates NIST SP 800-231's Bugs Framework (BF) against CWE as a target for automated CVE classification using a systematically screened corpus of CVE-to-CWE research. An inter-rater study with 2 subject-matter experts mapping 13 CVEs showed strong agreement on BF's cause and operation axes but only fair agreement on the attribute axis. Automated classification was tested across two LLM deployments under different budgets, and findings support BF as more structured and automation-friendly than CWE, though gaps include under-specified attribute guidance and missing fix commits for closed-source software.

H1 2026 Malware Vulnerability Trends

Recorded Future's H1 2026 report finds 215 actively exploited CVEs, RAT dominance, NFC payment fraud, and AI-augmented but not autonomous tradecraft.

Recorded Future's Insikt Group identified 215 actively exploited CVEs in H1 2026, up 34% from 161 in H1 2025, with the most impactful flaws combining network reachability, no authentication, and code execution. AsyncRAT was the top malware family, with AsyncRAT, Cobalt Strike, XWorm, Stealc, and REMCOS remaining top-ten staples; Android NFC malware like NFCShare and NGate enabled payment card theft and ATM cash-outs. AI-enabled attacks remained additive to established tradecraft, concentrated in Levels 1-3 of Recorded Future's AIM3 maturity model, with AI-assisted vulnerability research (e.g., Claude Mythos fixing 271 Firefox bugs in Firefox 150) inflating NVD disclosure volumes 43% above the prior six-month average. The report urges defenders to prioritize remotely exploitable RCE flaws, behavioral detection, developer credential security, and third-party oversight.

The CWE-522 insufficiently protected credentials vulnerability could expose authentication information and permit unauthorized access to RTU configuration through the Secure Lock functionality. The flaw carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.5 (medium), and the products are deployed worldwide in critical manufacturing and energy sectors. Abhinav Agarwal reported the vulnerability to CISA.

Siemens Teamcenter

Reflected XSS in Siemens Teamcenter /auth/ redirect flow lets unauthenticated attackers inject JavaScript into authenticated sessions (CVE-2026-58113).

CISA republished Siemens advisory SSA-157465 for CVE-2026-58113, a reflected cross-site scripting flaw (CVSS 6.1) in the /auth/ authentication redirect flow of Siemens Teamcenter V2412, V2506, V2512, and V2606. An unauthenticated attacker can craft a URL that injects arbitrary JavaScript into an authenticated user's browser, enabling data theft or actions within the victim's Teamcenter session. Fixed versions are available for all affected releases; Enzo Alvarez of Bishop Fox reported the vulnerability.

Vulnerability Localization Benchmark: Measuring Agentic Security Analysis at Repository Scale

VLoc Bench tests 27 language models at locating vulnerable files in 290 repositories; best system reaches 0.229 File F1 and 38.4% of tasks unsolved.

The Vulnerability Localization Benchmark (VLoc Bench) contains 500 real-world vulnerabilities from 290 repositories across six package ecosystems and 147 CWE categories, pairing pre-fix and post-fix repository snapshots. Agents receive only a CWE description and read-only terminal access to identify affected files, and must confirm absence on patched snapshots. The strongest of 27 language models and four static-analysis tools achieves just 0.229 File F1; 38.4% of tasks receive no correct localization, and effective localizers still report unsupported locations on patched repositories.

CVE-2026-85706: Critical GitLab Path Traversal Exploited in the Wild

CVE-2026-85706, a CVSS 10.0 unauthenticated path traversal in GitLab CE/EE, is actively exploited and was added to CISA's KEV catalog.

GitLab patched CVE-2026-85706, a critical path traversal (CWE-22) in the repository commits API scoring CVSSv3.1 10.0, allowing unauthenticated arbitrary file reads on affected self-managed servers under certain conditions. CISA added it to the KEV catalog on September 11, 2026, citing active exploitation, with a September 14 remediation deadline and BOD 26-04 forensic triage requirements. Fixed versions are 19.1.8, 19.2.6, and 19.3.2; the release also fixes 17 other vulnerabilities including CVE-2026-87719, a CVSS 9.9 insecure deserialization flaw in GitLab EE.

VLC Media Player Flaws Let Attackers Corrupt Memory and Leak Sensitive Data

VLC 3.0.0-3.0.23 has two flaws: a heap out-of-bounds write via malicious PNGs (CVE-2026-56711) and an out-of-bounds read via hostile RealRTSP servers.

CVE-2026-56711 is a heap out-of-bounds write (CVSS v4 8.6) caused by an integer overflow in VLC's AllocatePicture routine when processing PNG images with exceptionally large IHDR width and height values, allowing writes past the allocated buffer; it maps to CWE-190 and CWE-787 and was credited to Fabian Wahle of Hap Security. CVE-2026-73324 is a medium-severity out-of-bounds read (CVSS v4 6.9) in VLC's RealRTSP handling, where RtspReadLine copies response lines longer than 4,096 bytes into a fixed buffer without null termination, potentially leaking heap data back to a hostile RTSP server via the Session header. Both bugs affect VLC 3.0.0 through 3.0.23, and updated builds had not yet been released at the time of disclosure.

CISA Adds Exploited MikroTik RouterOS Flaws to Security Alert

CISA added two actively exploited MikroTik RouterOS flaws, CVE-2026-67277 and CVE-2026-86060, to its KEV catalog with a September 13 mitigation deadline.

CISA added CVE-2026-67277 and CVE-2026-86060 in MikroTik RouterOS to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 10, giving federal agencies until September 13 to apply vendor mitigations. CVE-2026-67277 is a missing-authentication flaw (CWE-306) in the bandwidth-test (btest) service that can expose kernel memory and cause denial of service; CVE-2026-86060 (CWE-88) lets attackers manipulate the trusted RouterOS policy mask for privilege escalation. CISA designated CVE-2026-86060 as requiring forensic triage under Binding Operational Directive 26-04, meaning organizations should hunt for compromise indicators, not just patch. Compromised routers could have altered routing rules, persistence, traffic interception, or use as pivots into internal networks.
