PostgreSQL Fixes 12-Year-Old Logical Decoding Flaw Enabling Replication-Role Code Execution

PostgreSQL fixed CVE-2026-6471 (CVSS 7.2), a 12-year-old logical decoding flaw letting replication-role accounts execute arbitrary code as the database OS user.

PostgreSQL patched CVE-2026-6471 (CVSS 7.2), a flaw present since logical decoding shipped in 9.4 (2014) that lets an account with the REPLICATION attribute run arbitrary code as the database server's OS user when wal_level is logical. Versions before 18.6, 17.11, 16.15, 15.19, and 14.24 are affected; exploitation requires such an account, which backup, CDC, and monitoring tooling routinely holds. The fix adds an output_plugin_libraries whitelist, so administrators using non-default plugins such as wal2json and decoderbufs must add them and reload configuration after updating. Cyera Research, whose write-up names the flaw PostGREShell, demonstrated escalating a replication user to superuser with persistence; no PoC or KEV entry existed as of September 4.

Decade-old PostgreSQL flaw turns backup account into a backdoor

Cyera disclosed CVE-2026-6471, a decade-old PostgreSQL flaw letting REPLICATION-attribute accounts achieve RCE and superuser compromise, patched August 13.

Cyera Research's 'PostGREShell' flaw exists in PostgreSQL's logical replication output plugin loading, where the replication code path never called the library-path security check, allowing path traversal or UNC paths to load arbitrary code. A low-privilege backup account can achieve code execution on Windows, Linux, and macOS, then escalate to superuser with persistent backdoor access. CVE-2026-6471 affects versions back to PostgreSQL 9.4 (2014) and was patched in releases 18.6, 17.11, 16.15, 15.19, and 14.24 on August 13. CVSS is 7.2, and no exploitation of this specific CVE has been confirmed, though VirusTotal hunting found 114 malicious PostgreSQL plugins.

Turn it off and on again, but for critical infrastructure

KTH researchers trained a reinforcement-learning intrusion response agent on an emulated segmented OT network that autonomously resets hosts and processes to disrupt intruders.

Researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology built a containerized replica of a segmented industrial network, attacked it across 14 days, and captured 40,000 30-second traffic intervals to train a defense agent under partial observability. The agent observes six packet-count numbers per interval, maintains 500 running state hypotheses, and can reset supervisory hosts, water tank processes, or entire subnets, with resets rebooting the target, renewing credentials, and changing its IP. The best agent approached a full-visibility baseline but depends on an assumed attacker behavior model; the testbed comprised three supervisory hosts, two PLCs, two tanks, weak credentials, and CVE-2017-7494 exposure. Researcher Dominik Reichel documented SLEEPWALKER, an unsigned 59,904-byte 64-bit Windows DLL that side-loads into ESET Management Agent's ERAAgent.exe while impersonating dpapi.dll. The implant monitors every network interface indefinitely for a specifically crafted trigger packet, then executes commands written in a custom 23-instruction bytecode language over six transports, including TCP, UDP, ICMP, SMB named pipes, raw promiscuous capture, and VMware VMCI. It has no embedded infrastructure, makes no outbound connections of its own, and requires prior local administrator access to install; no victims, attribution, or in-the-wild deployment are confirmed. Reichel assesses the design as consistent with a targeted, well-resourced operation, while ESET calls the scenario's security relevance negligible since it provides no new access path.

Exploitation of Sangoma Switchvox flaw is underway (CVE-2026-9586)

Attackers actively exploit SQL injection flaw CVE-2026-9586 in unauthenticated Sangoma Switchvox endpoints, dropping reverse shells and second-stage cryptominer malware.

CVE-2026-9586, an unauthenticated SQL injection in Sangoma Switchvox SMB Edition 8.3, lets crafted HTTP POST requests execute arbitrary SQL against the backend PostgreSQL database. Horizon3 honeypots first saw exploitation on August 30, 2026 from IP 176.65.148.184, and dozens of additional source IPs have since joined with scanning payloads and second-stage malware that appears to be a cryptominer. The flaw was patched in Switchvox 8.4.0.2 on July 14, 2026; roughly 4,000 exposed instances exist, mostly in the United States, and exploitation is likely against most of them.

Vishing campaign abuses Microsoft Teams to give attackers a foothold in company networks

Unit 42 details 'Spring Ring', a vishing campaign using fake IT support on Microsoft Teams to reach 150+ employees at 10+ companies.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 documented 'Spring Ring', a voice-phishing campaign that ran January to April 2026, using 26 attacker identities and fake Microsoft 365 tenants such as 'ITProtectionDepartment' to impersonate internal IT support on Microsoft Teams. One path used Quick Assist or downloaded remote-support tools to run an obfuscated PowerShell script that disabled malware scanning before contacting C2; the other delivered a cloud-hosted file triggering browser hijacking, SMB internal network scanning, and a PetitPotam NTLM relay attempt against domain controllers to gain domain-level privileges. Both intrusion attempts were blocked before attackers reached their objectives. Collaboration-platform phishing alerts rose to 42% of Unit 42's telemetry in early 2026, up from 30%.

Aurora Ransomware Operators Use Cursor AI in Attacks Against 10 Targets

Aurora ransomware operators used Cursor AI running Claude Sonnet to plan and execute intrusions against dozens of organizations in nine countries.

CloudSEK and Gambit Security analyzed exposed infrastructure tied to the Russian-speaking Aurora (Aur0ra) group, revealing months of activity against more than 20 organizations across nine countries between April and July 2026, with 33 victims listed by Ransomware.Live. The operator used the Cursor agentic coding assistant to plan attacks in Russian, including an AD CS exploitation plan, and Gambit observed Cursor Agent (running Anthropic's Claude Sonnet) performing hands-on exploitation tasks such as Nmap scanning, NetExec enumeration, NTLM relay, and certificate attacks against 10 targets. Attacks begin with email bombing plus IT help desk vishing via Xray-core, followed by SMB/LDAP/WinRM/RDP lateral movement, log clearing, Defender disabling, and exfiltration; the Windows and Linux/ESXi encryptors are built from a single Zig codebase, with shadow copy deletion and VM-killing before encryption.
