Risky Bulletin: Russia tells data centers to deploy drone defenses
Russia ordered data center operators to deploy drone strike defenses under a Putin decree allowing temporary state takeover of unprotected critical infrastructure.
The Russian government instructed data center operators to deploy protections against drone strikes under a presidential decree signed by Putin that allows temporary state administration of critical infrastructure operators failing to defend against Ukrainian hacks and drone strikes. Although data centers are not formally critical infrastructure in Russia, the decree applies to them because other sectors depend heavily on cloud services; Russia has more than 180 data centers, over 80% in the European region within range of Ukrainian strikes. The digest also reports a Dropbox breach affecting nearly 5,000 accounts via the Lenovo ID integration, spyware attacks on at least 14 Serbians using NoviSpy or Pegasus, and a password recovery attack targeting hundreds of thousands of X accounts tied to the new X Money service. Other items include a 14-hour compromise of Coder's Cloudflare infrastructure delivering malicious Terraform modules, donor data breaches at Davayte and You Are Not Alone via the Stripe/WooCommerce integration, a $2.5M Aquifer crypto heist, and a TVING breach exposing data of almost 40 million accounts.
China-Linked Jewelbug Uses XG-Web for Government Espionage and Crypto Fraud
China-linked Jewelbug runs government espionage and crypto fraud from a single XG-Web browser-based control framework.
Broadcom's Symantec and Carbon Black detail Jewelbug, a China-based hackers-for-hire group conducting espionage against governments and militaries in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South Asia, plus crypto fraud against Chinese-speaking victims. Operations center on XG-Web, a browser-centric remote-access and infostealing framework, with implants spanning browsers, Windows, Linux, and network devices. The group overlaps with CL-STA-0049, Ink Dragon, Earth Alux, and REF7707, and compromised a Middle Eastern government's webmail across 15 tenants.
CISA: Critical VMware RCE flaw now exploited by ransomware gangs
CISA warns ransomware gangs now exploit critical VMware vCenter syslog RCE CVE-2026-59310, already KEV-listed after APT compromises across 47 countries.
Broadcom patched critical directory traversal flaw CVE-2026-59310 in the vCenter Syslog server on July 29, warning of unauthenticated remote code execution. QUIRSO subsequently found 361 compromised IPs across 47 countries after a suspected APT deployed a reverse SSH tool for persistence and remote access. CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog with a three-day patch deadline for federal agencies, and over the weekend updated it to flag active abuse by ransomware gangs. Shadowserver tracks over 450 exposed vCenter servers, and CISA has tagged 26 VMware vulnerabilities as exploited in the wild over five years, nine abused by ransomware.
CVE-2026-33824: CISA Flags Windows IKE RCE as Exploited
CISA added four actively exploited vulnerabilities to its KEV catalog, headlined by CVE-2026-33824, a Windows IKE Service Extensions remote code execution flaw.
CISA's KEV addition, dated August 18, covers CVE-2026-33824 in Windows IKE Service Extensions, CVE-2026-55040 in on-premises Microsoft SharePoint Server, CVE-2026-59310 in Broadcom VMware vCenter, and CVE-2026-65400 in Apple macOS Screen Sharing. KEV listing confirms observed exploitation in the wild. Three of the four products are frequently deployed as high-value enterprise infrastructure, including remote-access endpoints and collaboration platforms.
