Seeing is Not Believing: Breaking the Physical-to-Digital Trust Boundary in Robotics

Researchers show a single ROS 2 environment variable lets attackers inject fake telemetry and hijack robots while spoofing downstream remote attestation.

A pre-built hook loaded via one modified environment variable covertly intercepts and injects both telemetry and control signals before publication in ROS 2, breaking the physical-to-digital trust boundary in multi-robot task handovers. Attackers can also distribute compromised third-party Docker containers and auxiliary tools embedding the hooks. On a physical Franka Emika arm running Secure ROS 2, the attack injects fabricated telemetry in real time with roughly 3 ms jitter and achieved an 87% success rate even against an AI-based detector. Findings were responsibly disclosed to the ROS 2 development team.

A Graph-Based Approach for Mapping Kernel-Level Telemetry to MITRE ATT&CK

Trace2ATT&CK maps eBPF kernel telemetry to MITRE ATT&CK via provenance graphs and RAG with local open-weights LLMs, validated on 347 Atomic Red Team tests.

Trace2ATT&CK collects kernel-level events via eBPF, correlates attacker commands into a provenance graph, and derives compact graph representations suitable for LLM-based reasoning, mapping behavior to MITRE ATT&CK techniques with ranked candidates and rationales. Mapping uses both pure LLM prompting and retrieval-augmented generation grounded in the ATT&CK knowledge base. It was evaluated on 347 Linux Atomic Red Team tests using locally deployed open-weights LLMs. RAG consistently improved ATT&CK mapping over pure prompting, and provenance graphs substantially outperformed raw telemetry, without compromising data confidentiality.

A Malicious SIM Card Can Run Attacker Code Inside the Modems Behind Cellular IoT Devices

Researchers showed malicious SIM cards can issue RUN AT commands to execute code on Qualcomm modems, compromising Quectel-based cellular IoT devices like EV chargers.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham and Fuzzware found 9 of 26 tested devices accept SIM proactive commands, including six Qualcomm-based cellular modules, five of them Quectel. They achieved code execution on a commercial Autel EV charger via the Quectel EC25's atfwd_daemon unsafe format string, and demonstrated an irreversible 2G downgrade, modem power-off, and arbitrary file reads via a root TFTP daemon on a Quectel EG25-G. Attacks require a hostile SIM already in the slot or an interposer; no attacks have been reported in the wild. Qualcomm has built a hardened configuration disabling the interface by default and Quectel mitigated the file-access flaw; the paper was presented at USENIX WOOT.

Inside Knight Office, a New M365 AiTM Phishing Kit

Huntress details Knight Office, a new AiTM phishing kit stealing Microsoft 365 session tokens and registering attacker-controlled devices.

Huntress investigated an August 18, 2026 adversary-in-the-middle attack using the Knight Office phishing kit, which captured Microsoft 365 session tokens via a DocuSign-style lure routed through a Monday.com tracking link and a compromised Joomla site. After token capture, the actor enrolled an unauthorized host in Microsoft Entra ID and bound a Windows Hello for Business key credential to the account. The kit's operator console, found at IP 104.37.188.94, is built on Python Flask and hosts at least 25 .vu phishing domains. Telemetry links the kit to at least nine token-replay logins in two weeks and roughly 700 reported lure emails since April.

Microsoft patched 973 vulnerabilities this month, its largest Patch Tuesday ever and far above the previous record of 664 set in July 2026, with 113 rated critical. Two Important elevation-of-privilege flaws (CVSS 7.8) are confirmed exploited in the wild: CVE-2026-81963 in the Windows Update Stack (improper link resolution, affects Windows 11 and Server 2025) and CVE-2026-85880 in Windows ALPC (heap-based buffer overflow allowing sandbox escape to SYSTEM, affects Windows 10 and Server 2012-2022). Critical unauthenticated RCEs (CVSS 9.8) were also fixed in Skype for Business Server (CVE-2026-66302), Windows Message Queuing (CVE-2026-69579), and Windows RRAS (CVE-2026-69590). SANS urges prioritizing the two exploited EoP fixes, then patching exposed MSMQ, RRAS, and Skype for Business deployments.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 describes post-exploitation techniques in which an attacker with root on a compromised Kubernetes node spoofs Linux cgroup metadata used by the SPIRE agent during workload attestation, tricking it into issuing a co-located workload's SPIFFE Verifiable Identity Document to an attacker-controlled process. The research shows the core trust assumption of machine-identity systems—that the node is trusted—collapses once root is obtained, exposing all cryptographic identities scoped to that node. Unit 42 released an open-source tool, Spooffe, for defenders to test identity exposure, and notes the technique has not been observed exploited in the wild.

Infostealer activity affected about a quarter of investigated organizations, mostly delivered via browsers through compromised websites, malicious ads, sponsored search results and ClickFix fake CAPTCHA gates, with payloads including Lumma Stealer, Vidar, HijackLoader and AsyncRAT. Credential phishing was the largest category at about 28%, with adversary-in-the-middle relays revealed by seconds-long MFA approvals from distant countries and MFA fatigue attacks exploiting automatic unlock policies.

Revolut Data Breach Via Fake Government Requests – What We Know So Far

Revolut confirmed attackers extracted customer KYC records by sending fraudulent data requests from a spoofed or compromised government agency email domain.

Revolut confirmed a data breach in which an unauthorized party obtained sensitive customer records by submitting fraudulent information requests from an email account on a legitimate government agency domain with valid SPF/DKIM/DMARC authentication. Disclosed data could include full names, dates of birth, passport or driving-license copies, onboarding facial images, IBANs, account statements, withdrawal records, and complete transaction histories including Bitcoin activity. Crypto investigator ZachXBT assessed the operation targeted high-net-worth users, while a threat actor using the name 'IAmNotAVillain' claimed Italian law-enforcement departments were compromised over six months with 147 GB of material, claims that remain unverified. Revolut says only a limited number of customers were affected, blocked the email address, and notified regulators and affected customers, stating its systems and funds were not compromised.

N-able disclosed a third N-central vulnerability, CVE-2026-86218, a pre-authentication RCE rated CVSS 10.0, and released hotfix 2026.3 HF4 superseding build 2026.3.1.13. Huntress reproduced an exploit chain involving an authentication bypass (CVE-2026-86206/CVE-2026-86207) after a fully patched customer's N-central production server was compromised on September 4. Attackers appended strings like .invalid to account names and probed the /remoteControlAction.do?method=getPierDetails endpoint; Huntress worked with Cloudflare to disable adversary tunnel infrastructure. Hosted N-central instances are already patched; on-prem administrators must upgrade immediately.

Fake Apple Support AI Calls Target Stolen-Device Owners for Passcodes and 2FA Codes

SOCRadar's Threat Research Unit documented AnonyMousKIT, a credit-metered phishing-as-a-service platform that strips Activation Lock from stolen Apple devices across email, SMS, WhatsApp, recorded calls and AI voice agents. The 'Alice from Apple Support' personas request the device passcode, Apple ID credentials and a live 2FA code, with lures citing the handset's model identifier and live Find My status. Of 200 recovered AI calls made between August 31, 2025 and May 30, 2026, 179 targeted Brazil, and the calls cost $19.24 total via voice platform Vapi. Exposed log paths revealed 30 kit installations on 42 domains and 6,092 send attempts family-wide between March and July 2026.

Other campaigns included malvertising for a fake AI Windows plugin delivering the Vidar stealer and fraudulent DeepSeek installers distributed via GitHub. Initial access broker Storm-3075 used AI-themed malvertising to distribute payloads for multiple downstream actors, and Microsoft notes the AI services themselves were not compromised. Microsoft also details Defender protections such as Safe Links, Safe Attachments, and attack disruption against these multi-stage lures.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 documented 'Spring Ring', a voice-phishing campaign that ran January to April 2026, using 26 attacker identities and fake Microsoft 365 tenants such as 'ITProtectionDepartment' to impersonate internal IT support on Microsoft Teams. One path used Quick Assist or downloaded remote-support tools to run an obfuscated PowerShell script that disabled malware scanning before contacting C2; the other delivered a cloud-hosted file triggering browser hijacking, SMB internal network scanning, and a PetitPotam NTLM relay attempt against domain controllers to gain domain-level privileges. Both intrusion attempts were blocked before attackers reached their objectives. Collaboration-platform phishing alerts rose to 42% of Unit 42's telemetry in early 2026, up from 30%.

In large-scale mobility simulation it reconstructs full traces for 83% of users versus 22% for the best single-protocol baseline. It remains effective under partial sniffer coverage, including strategically placed sniffers near LTE handover regions, mobile sniffers, and limited high-coverage subregions.
