Hackers Chain Chrome and Windows Zero-Days in New BlueMoon Exploit Kit Attacks

Multiple espionage actors, mostly China-nexus, are chaining Chrome V8 and Windows kernel zero-days (CVE-2026-85046, CVE-2026-85880) via the BlueMoon exploit kit against government and defense targets.

Proofpoint identified a new exploit kit dubbed BlueMoon chaining a Chromium V8 type-confusion RCE (CVE-2026-85046), a V8 sandbox escape, and a Windows kernel LPE (CVE-2026-85880). At least four distinct threat clusters, most with suspected China nexus, adopted the kit within days starting with TA412 (Violet Typhoon/APT31) on August 28, 2026. Both Chrome-side flaws were patch-gap zero-days with roughly a four-week exploitation window; the Windows LPE only works on Windows 10 and Server 2019/2022. TA412 used spearphishing posing as university interns to deliver the GemStone browser backdoor disguised as a Google Gemini extension; other clusters delivered ShadowPad via DLL sideloading and a Rust loader against targets in aerospace, government, and finance.

Rogue ScreenConnect Installations Across Unrelated Hosts Suggest Worm-Like Activity

Huntress observed rogue ScreenConnect deployments with worm-like VBScript propagation across unrelated organizations, prompting a ConnectWise advisory on file transfer behavior.

Huntress identified multiple incidents in late August 2026 where social engineering led to rogue ScreenConnect remote access clients deployed on victim machines, which then spawned wscript.exe to run four VBScript payloads (1.vbs through 4.vbs) for profiling, telemetry collection, and persistence via a WindowsServiceHost Run key. High-severity V8 use-after-free and type-confusion defects are among the fixes, and Google has restricted technical details until most users are patched. Administrators should verify deployed versions on managed endpoints, as Chrome-derived browsers may follow different patch schedules.

Attackers Exploit Critical Switchvox Flaw to Deploy Reverse Shells Without Credentials

Attackers exploit unauthenticated SQL injection CVE-2026-9586 in Sangoma Switchvox to run PostgreSQL commands and deploy reverse shells.

Threat actors are exploiting CVE-2026-9586 (CVSS 9.3), an unauthenticated SQL injection in Sangoma Switchvox SMB Edition 8.3 (104997), since August 30, 2026, running arbitrary SQL as the PostgreSQL superuser and achieving remote code execution. The /pa endpoint concatenates the user-controlled PhoneIP value into PostgreSQL queries; attackers can extract database contents, escalate to Switchvox web administrator, exfiltrate the cookie signing key to forge authentication, and invoke reverse shells. Sangoma patched the flaw in Switchvox 8.4.0.2 on July 14, 2026, roughly 4,000 instances are internet-exposed (mostly in the US), and honeypot activity from IP 176.65.148.184 deploys reverse shells followed by Base64-encoded process enumeration.

CISA Warns of Critical GitLab Vulnerability Exploited in Attacks

CISA added actively exploited GitLab path traversal flaw CVE-2026-85706 to its KEV catalog, warning unauthenticated attackers can read arbitrary files including secrets.

CISA added CVE-2026-85706, an unauthenticated path traversal vulnerability (CWE-35) in the repository commits API of GitLab Community and Enterprise Editions, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 11, 2026, with a remediation deadline of September 14, 2026. The flaw allows arbitrary file reads via improper path confinement, potentially exposing configuration files, access tokens, private keys, and CI/CD variables that enable further intrusion and supply chain compromise. CISA requires forensic triage under Binding Operational Directive 26-04 and urges defenders to review logs for traversal requests and rotate potentially exposed credentials after patching.

Massive Redis Cryptojacking Campaign Hijacks Thousands of Linux Servers

RedisRaider cryptojacking campaign compromises thousands of exposed, unauthenticated Linux Redis servers using cron persistence to deploy XMRig Monero miners.

Hunt.io researchers track a large-scale cryptojacking operation named RedisRaider that scans IPv4 ranges for Redis services exposed on TCP port 6379 and targets instances accepting unauthenticated connections. From a master list of 12,966 candidate hosts, 2,342 were confirmed to accept commands without authentication. Attackers abuse Redis commands (CONFIG SET dir/dbfilename, SET, BGSAVE) to write malicious cron entries into /etc/cron.d or /var/spool/cron, launching XMRig-based Monero miners, with branches including SSH authorized-key injection, Lua probing, and WordPress spraying. The article also references CVE-2026-81934, a Redis TLS use-after-free allowing unauthenticated command execution, fixed in releases including 8.2.9, 8.4.6, 8.6.6, 8.8.2, and 8.10.1.

BGP hijack infecting networks caused by a comedy of errors that’s not funny at all

Attackers BGP-hijacked Softaculous IP space via Hetzner routing lapses to push malicious Virtualizor updates to hosting servers.

Unknown attackers hijacked the 162.55.80.0/24 prefix used by Softaculous' Virtualizor update service by abusing lax routing security at hosting provider Hetzner Online, announcing the range through AS6204, AS62390, and AS24940 with a forged but RPKI-valid origin. The hijack pulsed intermittently over roughly 33 hours, delivering modified update packages to Virtualizor servers, which lacked cryptographic code signing for updates. Softaculous says only a small number of servers were likely affected but cannot produce a definitive list, urging administrators to treat every Virtualizor server as in scope for checks.

Two CVSS 9.8 Auth Bypasses in miniOrange SAML WordPress Plugin Were Exploited Before Any Database Even Listed the Paid Editions as Vulnerable

Attackers actively exploit two CVSS 9.8 auth bypasses (CVE-2026-61979, CVE-2026-15981) in the miniOrange SAML WordPress plugin, forging SAML responses to become admin.

CVE-2026-61979 is a SAML algorithm confusion flaw that lets attackers sign forged assertions using the identity provider's RSA public key as an HMAC secret; CVE-2026-15981 stems from PHP treating openssl_verify()'s -1 error return as true, allowing a crafted signature that triggers an OpenSSL error to validate. Both bugs independently let unauthenticated attackers obtain WordPress administrator sessions and both are confirmed exploited in the wild. DigitalOcean discovered the exploitation via a network anomaly after public vulnerability databases covered only the Free edition (fixed in 5.4.5), leaving seven independently versioned paid editions appearing patched. Attackers are scanning SSO endpoints from six IPs in Belgium, Nigeria, the US and Germany, and paid-edition fixes require manual uploads across version lines.
